Hi there
Basically the battery was not fully discharged when it was brand new and now the battery thinks its fully charged at 80%.
In some laptops a cell may have failed but usually causes the battery not to charge at all.
Fully discharge the battery and see if it will resume a full charge, if not your stuck with it like that.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

You might have erased the Cells memory to be able to charge it to full capacity... this happens when it is constantly plugged into power source and has battery in as well.... even though you're using AC power, the battery drains and eventually it's cell memory thinks that 80% is full....

Try doing a bios update ... if it's not the battery itself, a bios update might have a correction for it...

This can be due to a dead cell in the battery pack,Could also be the charger is going bad or shutting off prematurely.

Sony vaio vgn-nr285E battery won't hold a charge

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

SONY VAIO BATTERY CHARGING

This is not a problem, this is a designed function to increase battery life. To adjust this, go to "vaio control centre", and then power management. Inside this is battery care, here you can adjust the settings or de-activate this function.
