How to take off needle plate on Bernina 170

Bernina calls this the stitch plate (where the feed dogs come up and the needle goes down). To remove the plate, turn off the sewing machine. Remove the sewing table if it is in place. Take off the presser foot and remove the needle. Open the free-arm cover (bobbin cover in the sewing machine front view, page 4) by tilting it down towards you. Press down on the back right corner of the stitch plate and lift the stitch plate off to remove it. See page 68 of the manual for the Bernina Artista 170 for the pictures that go with the above steps. Bernina has the manual on the product page: https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Machines-US/Series-Overview/BERNINA-artista/BERNINA-artista-170 . The current link to the manual is https://www.bernina.com/BERNINA/media/Support/Sewing_Quilting_Embroidery/artista/artista_170/Documents/EN/008853-73-04_Naehen_a170_EN_online.pdf .

I hope this helps.

How do I remove a stuck bobbin casing from a Bernina sewing machine?

Is it a drop in bobbin machine? If so, take off the needle and the needle plate (=throat plate), and you should have clearance to pull it out. If it's a vertical bobbin machine, taking off the needle plate may buy you the extra clearance you need to get things out again. Sometimes a drop of sewing machine oil every where you see a potential "bind spot" can help. Just mop out the excess oil after you've retrieved the bits that fell in.

How do you remove the throat plate?

Not sure what you mean by 'throat plate' - do you mean the stitch plate/needle plate ? If-so, the best way is to drop the feed-dogs by pressing the button in the bottom of the handwheel end panel and you then press firmly on the back right-hand corner of the stitch plate - it should then pop-up on the opposite corner and you can remove it. It's held-in by two spring retainers. When replacing it, position it so that the hole in the front right corner of the plate is over the locating lug first and the right-hand side of the plate is in place, then press the left-hand side down into the grey plastic surround in the free-arm.

Hope that helps.

I have inherited a Bernina Activa 140 and have the manual, have followed instructions to the letter but the thread keeps breaking, the bobbin is O.K. It sew for about 3 stitches and then the thread breaks

Check the manual to be sure the needle is inserted correctly.

Also - check the needle to be sure it is not bent and that there are no burrs or nicks on the throat plate.

Berninas hold their value and it is worth investing in the service fee to have the machine thoroughly gone over by a Bernina certified tech.

Now take a lint brush and clean under the feed dogs and hook area. take the bernina oiler(must be bernina oil only) now place a drop just below where the bobbin case clip on and one small drop under the feed dog area. replace items, sew out a test sample and away you go

The hand wheel won't move. i tried to see if the feed dog was at fault and moved the lever back and forth and now the feed dog is stuck in the down position - and the hand wheel won't move

Open the throat plate and bobbin area to see if thread has tangled there. Snip and remove thread with tweezers - do not yank or **** and tangles out of the machine.
