SOURCE: replaced danco cartridge 88198 three times. only

Danco is an after market faucet parts company that recreates parts cheap for hardware supply chains and such. You would be ahead to try and find the brand of faucet you are trying to repair and get OEM parts. They will probably cost a little more, but will hold up a lot better. I hope this helps.

You will need to remove the old cartridge from inside the shower valve body and either refurbish it with new rubber seals and O rings or replace the cartridge altogether (preferable). It's not a complicated fix but the Posi Temp cartridge can be a bear to remove. Moen and Danco make special 'pullers' to make the cartridge removal go a little easier (sold at Lowes/HD and plumbing supply for anywhere between $15 and $35 but well worth it, IMO).

The cartridge is the culprit. Replace it with an OEM Moen cartridge. What happens is that some replacement cartridges may not operate the same as the moen brand when they are in the closed position. This can sometimes result in the water hammer effect you are experiencing. Change the cartridge and it should alleviate the problem. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go at it from a different angle.

I'm not aware of any problems with non moen replacement parts being the cause for a water hammer problem. Start with the simplest and cheapest correction which is using a moen replacement cartridge. If the water hammer persists then you may have to install a water hammer arrester in the plumbing system. This is basically a shock absorber in the plumbing system to stop the effect of water hammer. An arrester will cost you around $10 to $15 at your local plumbing supply shop. If you are not comfortable soldering copper then you will want to hire a licensed plumber to complete the work for you.

I had the same type of problem with an older toilet in my house. It developed a water hammer when it shut off after filling the tank. I replaced the fill valve with a generic universal replacement for about $10 and it stopped. Again sometimes the simplest fix will work. Let me know how it works out.

Installed new Moen posi-temp cartridge. Hot & cold water is correct but water will not shut of*** the way.

I just had the same experience, except I used a non-Moen cartridge. (It was from Ace Hardware, and Ace told me that Danco was the manufacturer.) When I pulled the cartridge back out, one of the two hard plastic seals on the side of the cartridge had torn, presumably on the sharp metal opening on the water supply pipe. I'm guessing there's something wrong with one or both of the seals on your new cartridge.

Does danco offer a replacement cartridge for american standard cartridge O28610-0070A

Danco is an aftermarket supplier of plumbing repair parts for almost all major brands. Look for a danco part that looks like the part you need then check the "compatible with" list on the package.
