When you get an HP integrated ink cartridge refilled (i.e. HP 60, 61, 74, 75, 901, 92-98....currently offered at Costco today) or if you buy a remanufactured/compatible HP ink cartridge, the ink levels cannot be reset (HP has a smart chip embedded within the nozzle plate at base of ink cartridge which counts the drops and then registers as empty).....so you'll just need to live with it and ignore 'ink low', 'non-genuine', 'counterfeit' messages and similar while you are using these types of aftermarket supplies. The first video below provides an overview of the 'low ink' phenomena, the 2nd video provides suggested cartridge prep/handling instructions when you return the cartridge for refilling:

HP 74, 75, 74XL, 75XL Cartridges - Solving Errors & Warnings:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5ISTGyScWU

Ink Refilling & Cartridge Care Tips - Everything you need to know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnXoDIblpdU

If the new (or refilled/reman/compatible) HP 74, 75, 74XL, or 75XL ink cartridge refuses to complete the printer alignment following cartridge installation, then the ink cartridge either has a connectivity issue with the flexible printed circuit cable (inside unit where cartridge mates with cable), rear cartridge contacts or cable contacts are dirty with ink residue, or the cartridge is suffering from marginal internal electrical performance. If you run into a problem where the ink cartridge is performing marginally and blocks printing (via the Red X), you can bypass the error message (usually only 1 time per clearing action):

HP Photosmart 4200-4500 5200-5500 Printers -Cartridge Error Bypass (HP 74-75 Cartridges):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDxRkAGOJaI

HP Officejet J5700/J6400 Printers -Cartridge Error Bypass (HP 74-75 Cartridges):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X3_D90SSq4

These types of severe cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem", etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #74/75 cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge, are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. You can also run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test).....go to www.inkjet411.com for more information on your specific printer model.

SOURCE: Installed updates now HP printer won't accept refilled ink

HP does not recommend refilling thier tanks, their print heads are built in to the cartridge so if you refilled it before resetting the tanks you will have to go to www.hp.com and run the trouble shooting tool for free to fix your issue. you may have to replace the catridge.

SOURCE: had ink refilled at costco...now printer wont SPAM ALERT 1-800-532-4187

Go to www.inkjet411.com or www.costcoinkjetrefill.com for tips on how to get around this problem. The printer thinks it is an old cartridge. By resetting the printer it will sometimes fix the problem and let you use the cartridge. Can also use 2-3 cartridges in a rotation to trick the printer

SOURCE: Just installed refilled black ink cartridge on hp

By using refilled cartridges you will always have this problem. Each cartridge has a chip that lets the printer know when it is full or empty. By pressing the ok button you may be able to clear this message. However, most of the time you can still be able to print and ignore the message.

How do I clear a carriage jam on my HP D7160 printer?

We suggest you first remove all of the ink cartridges from the HP D7160 printer, then attempt the carriage un-jamming instructions as provided by the others above. If the jam still cannot be cleared then either the flex driver cable has a problem or the service station (below carriage assembly) is blocking carriage travel.

For advanced HP D7160 printer diagnostics specific to your printer model, please refer to 'HP Diagnostics Tests' .pdf file at the following Inkjet411 support site link: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1813

Get the orange plastic top off the black ink cartridge

With respect to your HP OJ J4680 printer, which uses HP 901/901XL ink cartridges, it sounds like this is either a compatible/clone cartridge from overseas in which case you should not remove the orange top as it is molded into the cartridge, or you recently purchased or had the ink cartridge refilled (at Costco, etc.) and the storage clip (which seals the base of the cartridges to prevent the nozzles from drying out) is attached to the ink cartridge. If this is a storage clip, just press hard on the clips top lever at an angle to remove. See our videos on cartridge care tips and how to troubleshoot an ink cartridge error/problem on the HP OJ J4500, J4600 and OJ 4500 series printer models:

I filled my hp 61 cartridges myself.I am having problems getting the ink to flow right, with the black cartridge

When filling cartridges yourself (i.e. DIY kits) you need to ensure that a proper vacuum prime occurs...often this is tricky if the internal foam is not properly 'wetted'. I suggest you take your HP61 ink cartridges to either Costco (most locations) or any Fry's Electronic Stores for ink refilling (typically ~40-70% cost savings vs. new cartridge cost)...the refill operators use a commercial grade ink refilling machine that preps, evacuates, cleans and then fills the cartridge automatically....followed by an electrical nozzle/jetting test. Anything goes wrong (at home) and you'll likely get a refund.

To find the nearest refill Costco store location and/or Costco pricing information, you can find this information at http://www.costcoinkjetrefill.com

Is it possible to use non HP ink in ths printer? Tried using "remanufactured ink", and concluded that this printer may be programed to block the use of NON HP INK.

It is always recommended to use genuine HP cartridges.
As if we will use the non HP or refilled cartridges, it will reduce the life of the printer.
And we will get an error "cartridge problem".
Plaese use the below cartridges, which are compatible with this printer.
HP 02 Black 660 pages
HP 02 Black Twin Pack 1320 pages
HP 02 Color Combo See single 02 inks
HP 02 Cyan 400 pages
HP 02 Light Cyan 240 photos
HP 02 Light Magenta 240 photos
HP 02 Magenta 370 pages
HP 02 Photo Value Pack 150 photos
HP 02 Yellow 500 pages
