I run my son's rainmate in his room everynight. Lately it has started making a screeching noise when I first turn it on. Last night it made the screeching noise and then would intermittently stop spinning and start back up. What's wrong with it? Also, I don't know how to remove the spinner to take a look at it and clean it! Help! I can't live without this thing!
Mine started making a noise. I turned the fan by hand and could feel drag due to dry bushings. Could not get it apart to service the motor, so after removing the fan, I used compressed air to blow all of the dust out of everywhere that I could. Then I figured out where the shaft would line up on the top of the case and carefully drilled aprox 1/4 hole aligned with the shaft. Cleaned out the debris, put a drop of light weight non detergent oil at each bushing on the motor, worked in by rotating the shaft by hand - along with gently pushing and pulling on the shaft while rotating. Re-assembled and seems to be working fine. In my case, the noise was caused by dry bushings. Although I now have a hole in the top, the unit is working. CAUTION - DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH MOTORS.
It sounds like the motor may be going bad. Not a lot you can do with these machines when the motor goes out. To remove the fan and stem, you twist the stem until in unlocks and can pull it off, next just pull the fan straight down and it will pop off.
If you have had this unit a long time chances are Rainbow will not do anything for you about the unit motor dying. If that is the case we do have a similar item that is a little more budget friendly, looks a little different but works very well.
