My Insinkerator instant hot water heater sputters when the water is turned on

I tried flushing the lines as directed in the manual, but it still sputters with air in the line whenever it is turned on.

I found the cause of the sputtering problem for my insinkerator hot water dispenser! If you take the unit apart (there are instructions and videos online, but it's not hard), you find a small plastic tank at the top of the hot water tank. The tub connected to this is where air enters the system, via the small air hole under the the faucet (at least on my setup). This plastic tank has a one way valve at the bottom. I could see that this whole valve area had lots of black stuff (probably black algae) and guessed that it was blocking air from entering the system. If air can't get in, then it will enter from the main faucet nozzle, which will cause sputtering. I cleaned out the black algae as well as hard water deposits by running vinegar through the plastic tank using a small fountain pump, in a closed loop. Left it that way for an hour or so, then banged it around until I could get all of the algae and deposits out. I then put it back together and it doesn't sputter now! (Well, maybe it'll sputter some if you use a lot of hot water very quickly, so maybe the valve isn't completely clear, but it's definitely much better and doesn't sputter most of the time!)

(So, the TLDR is: the plastic tank inside can get clogged with algae and/or water deposits. Clean those out with vinegar and it goes back to working!)

This worked for me as well. There was one tiny screw at the top and that was all that was required to open up the case. The plastic tank on the top is removable; there is where the problem lies.

The funnel-looking outlet is normally pointed down, and was filled up with black stuff.

Check to see if the water temperature is set too high. Does the water feel too hot when it comes out?

-Check heater control valve. (The one open and closed water)
it should move when turn to hot or cold. If it move or turn.
-Next disconnect the heater hoses (Two lines) and flush with garden water hose from both direction for couple minutes.

Insinkerator instant hot water faucet

Insinkerator stainless tank does not have anode rod to protect from rusting. So these water heaters rust out at welds. And must be replaced. And this is frequent problem.
Copy following link for installing under-counter water heater and see manuals for various models available. Non-insinkerator water heaters have anode rod to protect from rusting:

No water being dispensed from my Insinkerator hot water tap following insallation of new filter

Probably debris from old filter got trapped in the line.
If the insinkerator has aerator, take that off and flush out debris.
Otherwise, the line will have to be taken apart and blown out.

There is a vibrating noise everytime I flush the toilet or wash clothes. It's only for an instant. I have one of those big blue water regulator tanks on my hot water heater in my garage. I don't...

I've found that excessive water pressure in the pipes can cause vibration and phantom sounds coming from the plumbing. If water pressure seems to be excessive, adjusting down the main supply line can be a easy as turning as turning the main valve a few degrees in either direction.

The water from the instant heater smells bad. I've changed the filter but the odor remains. What is this?

if the water supply from other outlets of the house are fine, the unit itself developed some mold or other contamination from period of non use. it will need to be flushed

Insinkerator hot water heater takes a long time to dispense water

It may have mineral deposit buildup on the inside. You will need to consult your maintenance manual to see how to flush the unit and clear it of deposits. You can also contact Insinkerator for the information as well. You can use vinegar to clean it just like you would a coffee pot. Take the inlet supply off and using a funnel pour the vinegar in and turn the unit on.

Insinkerator instant hot water tank leaking

When you cut the pipe it has to be cut square or it will leak . Try recutting the end of the pipe and then reinserting it. If this doesn't work then the only thing you can do is replace the fitting.
