JBL PB10 subwoofer, it makes a loud burp noise when it comes on.

I have a JBL PB10 subwoofer, and when it comes on, it makes a loud burp noise, and then it's fine after that. If I connect it to the subwoofer output on my receiver it burps frequently. When I run it from the main speaker outputs and attach my JBL L-100s directly to the subwoofer, it only burps once when I turn the receiver on- not as bad. What would cause that, and can I get rid of it?

pb10 makes a loud bang when i turn on my system, it is better now i got rid of the old sony and got a yamaha, there is a setting in some recievers that allows you to either turn off the sub or not when powering off, this will keep the the sub in standby mode and should not make anymore wierd noises when you turn your reciever on

In the industry - It is called "Turn-On Thump".

There are some manufacturers that eliminate components like noise filters on enry level lines to save money.

There is no way to lessen this noise without ripping the amplifier apart and having a technical knowledge of the way amplifiers work. It would involve hard-wiring a slow charge capacitor in the turn on line so it gradually builds power instead of getting it all at once.

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

PB10 does have a slow turn on function - I would guess there is a part failure - however to repair is expensive so just live with it and wait for the amp to die (burn up) like they do then have all issues fixed then :)

When I plug it up it makes a loud buzzing humming sound that's unconteollable with the volume.

Buzzing is usally AC line noise leaking into an un-shielded cable somewhere or a floating ground. If the AC plug is reversable, try that. make sure all audio cables are pluh\gged in tightly at each end and routed away from or at right angles to any power cords and away from other sources of strong magnetic fields like TV's. I've also seen variable track lights induce noise but it's usually minor.

If it still does it with no cables attached it's an internal amp problem.

Subwoofer will not power up

More likely to have shorted out Class D amplifier module that was badly designed.
Here are the service manuals:

I modified my using Linear Amp IC from TI, bot the same power but loud enough for me. http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/JBL%20PB-12%20mod/

JBL PB10 subwoofer sounds distorted and lights on the front flash

More likely to be the Class D power amp module, but you should look through the service manual to make sure all the parts are installed correctly. My PB10 AMP module went out and you cannot get one anymore.

Thump at the time of shutoff

The amplifier in the sub as with any other amplifier has a capacitor in it. Essentially a battery that holds a charge. When you trun things off such as subs or amps with a powerstrip instead of the intended on off button, the power supply has been cut, but the capacitor is still energizing the unit. So it catches the noise in the line.

PB10 Loud Hum and Crackle- LED Lights mixed Red/Green

Hello, Jesse. I doubt I can help, but there is at least one SIMPLE thing you can try - with maybe a 10% chance it wil return your unit to normal: Unplug the unit for 30 seconds, then plug it back in to a DIFFERENT outlet. Oh, yes - there are NO fuses or other "reset" devices. I'm sorry I couldn't offer you more help.
