I have a JBL PB10 subwoofer, and when it comes on, it makes a loud burp noise, and then it's fine after that. If I connect it to the subwoofer output on my receiver it burps frequently. When I run it from the main speaker outputs and attach my JBL L-100s directly to the subwoofer, it only burps once when I turn the receiver on- not as bad. What would cause that, and can I get rid of it?
In the industry - It is called "Turn-On Thump".
There are some manufacturers that eliminate components like noise filters on enry level lines to save money.
There is no way to lessen this noise without ripping the amplifier apart and having a technical knowledge of the way amplifiers work. It would involve hard-wiring a slow charge capacitor in the turn on line so it gradually builds power instead of getting it all at once.

pb10 makes a loud bang when i turn on my system, it is better now i got rid of the old sony and got a yamaha, there is a setting in some recievers that allows you to either turn off the sub or not when powering off, this will keep the the sub in standby mode and should not make anymore wierd noises when you turn your reciever on
