Error 42 indicates scanner failure. It is sometimes caused due to loose /
faulty scanner cable that connects scanner to motherboard.

SOURCE: Canon MP190 ScanGear error

Hi ....

Its always a pleasure to meet someone who has done the initial troubleshooting themself ... so looking at your comments, you have already tried the hardware and the drivers steps ... it shows that the issue is not with the device but something with your system ...

To me, it looks like the necessary files for the scan to work is missing from your system which is USBSCAN.SYS. This is a windows system file which is required by the scan drivers ...

Note: Make sure you are searching the hidden files too as this is a system file and could be hidden.

  1. Click 'Start', 'Search' and select 'For Files or Folders'.

  2. At 'Search Results' window, type usbscan.sys in 'Search for files or folders named' field.

  3. At 'Look in' drop-down menu, confirm your computer's hard drive is selected. In most cases, C: is the computer's hard drive.

  4. Click 'More advanced options' link.

  5. Confirm checkmarks appear beside 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders and 'Search folders'.

    searchmore_wxp.gif

  6. Click 'Search' button.

  7. Once search has completed and if the file does not exist, consult the computer manufacturer.

    1. If the file exists and a message appears while installing the scan driver, direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers.
    2. If the file exists and the message appears while scanning, click on the attachment to open Device Manager and check if the scanning device is listed as 'Other'. Then update the driver and direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers (where C is your computer's hard drive letter).

  8. Close the 'Search Results' window.
I think this file is missing from the computer which is causing the problem. But there is another possibility as well. There are some services of the computer that need to be started to make sure that the device works file. The services are for everything like spooler services for printer so similarly there are WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) Service or Stimon(98 or ME) services for scanner depending upon your operating system.

It might be possible that these services are stoped or disabled. Follow the below steps to enable those servers:

How to start the Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) Service (Win XP)
  1. Click Start.

  2. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. This brings up the 'Computer Management' window seen below.

    servic1.jpg

  3. Under 'Services and Applications' click Services. This will display a list of services in the right pane of the 'Computer Management' window. A portion of this window is seen below.

    servic2.jpg
  4. Scroll through the list to locate and then double-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
This brings up the 'Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Properties' window seen below.

    servic3.jpg

  5. Be sure that 'Startup type:' is not set to Disabled. You can choose either Automatic or Manual.

  6. Once you have enabled the 'Startup type:', under 'Sevice status:' click the Start button to start the service.

How to start STIMON (Windows 98 & Me)
  • Click Start, then Run, and type "stimon.exe" and click OK.

Well according to me, this should resolve the problem. Just one more very important thing ....

Don't forget to vote if this helps :) ... Cheers ...

SOURCE: trying to scan, but keep getting error code

I finally got a solution to my problem, which is the same as this one. When trying to scan via USB, you have to make sure the unit is set to USB. On the top panel just above the LCD display, is 3 buttons, Copy, Fax, Scan. Hit the SCAN button, till the display says USB SCANNING. Then try to scan again. Good luck!!

SOURCE: my canon mx320 multi function

Need to reset the cartridge.

How to fix the printing problem when Canon PIXMA MX320 series detected the errors in your cartridge?

After refilling the cartridge, the next thing to do is to reset the cartridge. This will clear your printer from displaying common printer errors like U041, U042, U053, U051 and U052. The importance of the "reset the cartridge" procedure is to avoid the printer from detecting your cartridge as reused one. The steps below is recommended to do after refilling an ink cartridge.
1. Turn off your printer
2. Press and hold the STOP/RESET button
3. Press and hold Power ON button
4. While holding the Power ON button, release the STOP/RESET button
5. While holding still the Power ON button, press twice the STOP/RESET button
6. Release the Power ON button
7. Wait until it display an "idle" message. It will take about a minute.
8. When "idle" appear, open the top cover to expose the cartridges.
9. Lift up the cover for cartridge holder and take out both the black and color cartridges
10. Return the cover of cartridge holder and turn off the printer
11. Return the top cover and turn on the printer again
12. After the printer initialize, return the cartridges.

For error U162 or U163 All functions of the all-in-one printer will stop and your printer will not work.
1. Turn off your printer an turn it on again
2. After the printer initialize try to copy or print. The error will appear.
3. When the error is displayed on the display panel of the printer, Press and Hold the STOP/RESET button and wait until it self restart.
4. Release the STOP/RESET button the the printer is restarting.
5. Wait for a few seconds and the pending print jobs will commence.

Please give this solution a good ratings. thanks

I have the same problem but mine is with a canon mp190. also says E5 error on lcd and 2,114,0 eror when i try and scan. what can i do

According the Canon the error code means this:

E, 4/ E, 5 The FINE Cartridge cannot be recognized

The FINE Cartridge may not be installed properly, or the Cartridge may not be compatible with this machine. Open the Scanning Unit (Cover), and then make sure that the FINE Cartridges are installed properly and that the installed FINE cartridges are compatible with the machine.
If the error is not resolved, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon Service representative.
The "fine cartridge" means the black printing cartridge. The black should be installed on the left and the color on the right.

Double check to make sure your cartridges are installed on the correct sides.

After verifying that they are on the appropriate sides, then turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source.

Remove and reinstall the black cartridge.

Plug the printer back in and turn it on. If the error code is still there, press the menu button and scroll using the arrows until you see the "maintenance" area on your printers display. Then press enter or "ok". Continue scrolling until you find the "clean print heads" function and then again press enter or "ok" Follow the instructions and clean the print heads at least two times.

If the cartridge is full and installed correctly, the according to Canon the print heads have trapped old ink in them and this could be cloggin the ink flow. Cleaning the print heads should solve that problem. If you still get the error code after cleaning the print heads a couple times then I suggest contacting Canon for a possible warranty repair.

Good luck!

Hello. My name is Boris, I have a Canon PIXMA MP190 printer, but can not SCAN if the printer is not cartridges, but I only want to scan not print anything, ¿can I change the settings to fix this...

There are no settings to change, The Canon will not operate to scan as long as there is an error. You need cartridges that are not empty before you can scan. It's not a problem, just the way multifunction machines are made. You should have a seperate scanner if you want only to scan. Sorry, no quick fix...

My canon mp190 gives an e42 error and the scanner makes a clicking sound like it's stuck

My MP190 had the same problem. The manual said to unplug the USB from the computer and unplug the printer from the wall (for about 30 seconds). Then turn everything back on again.
I tried this and it worked!

Canon Pixma MP190 all-in-one will copy offline and scan online however, when attempting to print online, status shows as 'error-printing'. have checked cables & power, cannot print from print command....

this sounds like a virus any ways, make sure u have a very good antivirus, remove and reinstall the printer with the driver but first go to the printer delete all the printers installed manually i.e after uninstalling the printer and its still showing the printer at printer and faxes, then reinstall it.
