First of All, HDMI is a High Definition Multimedia Interface and will transmit both Audio and Video at the same time all in one cable. Try using the HDMI cable to your Gaming INPUT on the receiver, or HDMI 1 setting.

Are you running a Bose Lifestyle system too? Or are you using Bose speakers only?

The audio inputs on the receiver need to be set to receive the Optical signal on the switch you set the ps3 to. ie Game, DVD, AUX. Each switch needs to be set to receive the audio signal coming into it. Usually on the remotes setup feature.

Using HDMI cant get video from ps3

Check your ps3's audio settings. They come under the settings tab, 7th from the top i guess, not sure. Just play around with the settings until you think the sound problem is fixed.

I have an RCA home theatre...model rt2910. I have hooked my PS3 via HDMI to the TV for the video and used an optical cable for the audio. I set the PS3 to send video via HDMI and audio via optical cable....

You should have the HDMI plugged into the Home theater unit. The theater unit then is attached to the TV using the HDMI out.
The home theater unit passes the HDMI through to the TV while playing the audio for you.
You will likely need to select the correct source on your RT2910.
Here is a link to the manual.

See the section entitled "Connecting to HDMI Components" for an illustration of what I have described above.

I'm trying to hook up my playstation 3 to my receiver and i can't get video or audio when using fibre optic and hdmi. how do i hook this up properly to get the best possible video/audio?

Having both HDMI and Fiberoptic cables causes conflicts with one another, HDMI carries both video and audio signals HDMI = Best. Hook your PS3 to your audio source with HDMI. then configure it through your PS3

How can i connect Nintendo wii to avr-590. Have

To connect a Nintendo Wii to an AVR-590, I am assuming this is a Denon Receiver, you will need to connect the Nintendo Wii to the TV, then connect audio out from the TV to the AVR-590 Receiver, and select the receiver to be in Pro Logic. Depending on the TV, if you have fiberoptic output on the TV, you would hook a fiberoptic out from the TV to the AV Receiver, but you will still not get true Dolby Digital, just Dolby Pro Logic. This will be the most effective way to solve the problem. Hope This Helps

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

No dish network sound through denon 1609 receiver

check the setting for the HDMI connection at the Denon you may have to assign the HDMI audio setting also on the front of the Denon while in the DVR mode press the input mode button on the front of the Denon to select auto and if that doesn;t give you sound you will have to connect a cable from the DVR optical.coaxial or analog audio output to the Denon and setup for that type of audio connection

No sound when ps3 is hooked up to a denon avr 1609

The 1609 only has video on the HDMI. No audio comes through the HDMI cables. Hook up an optical cable between your ps3 and the receiver and you should be good to go.

HDMI sound?

I had the same problem with my PS3. I have a HD cable box with HDMI out, a Sony DVD player with HDMI out. The Sony receiver STR-DG800 only has the HDMI inputs (sat/tv and dvd) and the HDMI is only a pass through port and will not decode audio.
I purchase a HDMI 4 port switch from Newegg (HS-41A0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812168003&Tpk=HS-41A0) to hook up the DVD and PS3 to the DVD HDMI and switch between the DVD player and the PS3. It took me several days to figure out how to make this work with the settings on the reciver.

1 the DVD player must use the coaxial in jack for sound on the receiver.
2. the PS3 must use the optical connection on video1
3. the sound settings in the PS3 must be set to PCM
4. set the sound setting on the receiver to the following

a. on the remote press AMP button then the MENU button, next press the down arrow to you see 5- AUDIO SET - then press enter.
b.set sound decode priorty to PCM
c. next scroll down to you see digital assign - press enter
assign VID1 OPTICAL to DVD ( this allows the pcm output from the PS3 to play through the receiver), next assign DVD to COAXIAL setting DVD to DVD (this allows the digital sound to play from your DVD player).

So when you use your remote and select DVD, you can use your PS3 or DVD through the 1 DVD HDMI port.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable

Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.
