Even though you can use regular AAA batteries (that you would have to replace often), there is a huge convenience factor with using the charging cradle that comes with the Sony headset. A solution I found was that I ordered some 550 mAh AAA batteries through Ebay (they came from England and cost me $8 total for four batteries). To make them work in the Sony headset you MUST use the bottom part of the plastic battery holder piece (all you need to do is peel off the BP-HP550-11 label and the bottom half of the plastic battery holder piece slips off of the Sony batteries). Then just slip in the new AAA batteries into the plastic battery holder bottom and then insert into the headset. The reason why you must use the bottom of the battery holder plastic piece is because the plastic piece pushes on a little switch. This switch activates the charging mechanism to enable the cradle charger to charge the batteries.
NOTE: I am not an electronics expert so I do not know if there would be any problem using other rechargeable AAA batteries (with higher mAh ratings). So I decided to be safe than sorry and ordered the 550 mAh batteries through Ebay.

it really works : you're a genius ! and this bad trick of sony is defeated...

  • ryan Nov 28, 2012

I think any Rechargeable NIMH AAA battery will work with this trick, the mah or milliamp hours i think represents the charge capacity when purchased obviously when my Sony batteries had a charge life of 20 min they did not have 500 mah anymore, its reduced over the life span of the battery, so if you have better quality battery with better mah great The voltage is more important, a rechargeable nimh is 1.2v (each) and regular (non rechargeable) AAA is 1.5 v so you would not want to use regular battery in a product that is made intended labeled used for rechargeable battery since the voltage would be different and could damage the electronics. in this case 2 rechargeable 1.2v NIMH battery will equal 2.4v same as the BP-HP550, considering those sell for $15 and up this solution to just use the bottom of their battery holder is perfect. I hate it when manufactures go through all the expense to develop custom molds to force us into buying their batteries, we already bought the product, they should just use standard battery and make a competitive battery if they want to sell batteries. Same problem with transformers and inverters and chargers and the crazy custom plugs they put on the ends so you have to buy their version only.

I need rechargeaable battery for wireless sony stereo headphones mdr-rf860r

Since many Sony headsets use the BP-HP550-11 battery pack, I assume your battery pack is the same. If not, I assume whatever battery pack your headset came with, it is some type of plastic holder that holds two batteries together. I have Model MDR-RF970R and the battery is not holding a charge. Where can I get another battery? The # on the battery is BP-HP550-11/2.4v 550mAh. Thanks. Joe

Sony has some special case they put around the original 2 batteries to hold them together.

You don't need to buy special batteries. You can put regular AAA NiMH in.

To remove the compartment cover on the headsets make sure you hold down the pressure button on the left headphone to release the cover. Mine has the words "PUSH" on them.

With the cover removed you can then see the original BP-HP550 sony battery. Which you can remove and put 2 regular AAA batteries in.
