yes the door was unplugged.after reassembly of the unit after installing gear kit the door was down and the inner track guide was in the down position when the chain was hooked up

  • temkim13 Feb 11, 2009

The original problem description is almost identical to my situation except my door tries to go down first, then up and stops with the door 1' off the ground.

I have adjusted the up and down limit controls, as well as the up and down weight control. The center contact (the traveller) doesn't even come close to touching the other contacts before stopping.

I have tried to run the motor with the chain off, the chain on with the door disconnected and several other combinations of conditions. No matter what variable changed the operation was the same.

    Any ideas?

What postion was the chain in when you installed it? Down? did you unplug the opener when you changed it?

Ok well the best advise I can give you is to open up your opener case should be a 1/4 nut driver or a Philips head screw driver. Make sure to unplug it first. Once the case is off, find a reqtangle black box with three white plastic screws they are what controls the limits. Chances are they got knocked off wheny ou were putting in the gear. check to make sure the wires are hooked up and find the placement of the limits make sure they can touch each other. Little tip I do for my customs is get a piece of sand paper and rub it agaist the metal contacts for the limits only. (after time lift master openers bind up a film and dont stop where they supposed to.) If your still not sure how the limits work plus in the opener and run it make sure not to put your hands inside the opener and nothing esle is in the way. Then adjest the limits as needed. That should take care of you if not go ahead and make another post ill check back with you.

How much is gear kit for 1/2 #41A2817?

Gear kits can be purchased for chain drive machines from any of these 3 brand names ...Liftmaster/sears craftsman /chamberlain / All 3 of these brand names are manufactured by Liftmaster the worlds largest maker of garage door openers and related parts ! You can purchase a gear kit on ebay for around $30 or less depending on the seller ! If you go to garage door parts sites it will be slightly higher so your best bet is EBAY , The gear kit only requires the main gear and sprocket housing that attaches with 3 screws , just remember after the gear is installed that you run the motor co that the trolley starts in the door down position otherwise you risk having the trolley smack into the opener , this is crucial for any travel adjustments that are made later! Hope this helps you ,sincerely Glenn

Two things. Check for a broken door spring. If okay, remove the cover from the motor housing and check for a bad drive gear. This is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. If it is going bad it should be obvious.

Garage door opener won't open or close door

The drive gear is stripped. Remove the cover and you can see it just in front of the motor. It is white nylon and the part number is 41A2817. Available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It will come with instructions.

Needs proper adjusment procedures

Check if your garage door is properly balanced. Pull the red handle to release the door and manually open it. It should stay up when opened all the way. Next, pull the door down to waist level. It should stay there. If not, the lift springs need adjustment, and that may be why the opener keeps reversing.

CRAFTMAN 1/2 HP OPENER

You say it only opens two feet?? Then closes?? If I may if you a little bit more costly option. Dont replace the gears. They used to be really good 8 years ago but the way they make the gears now there too soft and often strip out much faster. I would suggest that you do what we call a motor head change out. Take off your old chain drive motor head and buy a new one. Pretty simple. Two things though one always make sure you put the new one in with the door down. And the traveler in the down position ( The traveler is the metal thing hooked up to the chain) but far and your gear that you have it sounds to me that you dont have the gears close enough.. but 100 percent on that but a door should never close on it own. It's not safe.
