I have Boston Acoustics 7000569 MicroMedia Computer Speakers that came with my old Gateway computer. I want to keep using them because I am still pleased with the overall sound quality.
I am getting a loud humming sound from all three speakers when I plug in the power supply. I can stop it if I "adjust" the input plug to the subwoofer and wedge it to one side. But then only the right speaker works. Also, while I am adjusting the input plug, sound alternates between the left speaker and subwoofer, but not both at the same time. I tried swapping the input jacks for the left and right speakers. Same result, the speakers just switched places. The problem is not computer related. I had the same experience hooking speakers up to an iPod. If I just replace the subwoofer or its circuitry, will that solve my problem? Any other suggestions? Help!
It sounds more like the power supply is at fault (a filter capacitor dried up), but it'll take an oscilloscope to verify that - take it to a TV repair shop (if you can find one) or find a ham radio operator who still has test equipment. (If it happens even from an iPod, it'll be easy to troubleshoot, since the person doing it can use any audio source to cause the problem.)
Yes, I too had the same problem.... but I fixxed it !!! Yeah.. !!! Here is the solution.... I isolated the problem, and It lies in the female input jack (3.5 mm) its an internal problem(and or dead short caused by the male to female (purple) Is the color I believe ? Over the years parts get worn and sloppy... try opening up the sub cabinet and look and see just how the connector snaps into place or if anything else is comming into contact with the male and female jack ? Mine is still a little sloppy and loose and just doesn't seem to snap in firmly, and there is still somewhat of a short in there - but I eliminated the humming problem !! I also have the same problem with the whinning almost whistling sound coming from the set. I have tried other power supplies as stated above w/ no change. Same with phone jacks to cpu...
I have the same problem, it seems that the mini jack input is bad. I can do the same thing and if I get it pushed in a little more than half way and then pull it to the side and then push the sub up against the computer cabinet to hold the plug wire in place it will play out of both speakers and the sub. I can not find the mini jack anywhere.

I don't have access to this type of testing equip, but I will try to find a TV repair shop. I have seen references to the powewr supply on this website and others for speaker related problems. So, there must be a connection. I will look for a replacement. If cheap enough, I will just buy one.
