the actuator for the hub locking is faulty and not engaging the hub correctly. There may be badly worn teeth to engage or broken parts in the hub.
Have an accredited drive line shop check it out.
I would suggest replacing the passenger side and then driving the car and listen for any popping noise while turning your vehicle to identify problems with the drivers side. Depending on the cost of the boot replacement the shaft can be just a few dollars more, I priced a boot for my pickup the other day and the cost was 43.oo and the shaft was only 52.00 complete. I suggest just replacing the part that you know is broken and then listen for any other damage. I will follow your progress. You dont want to be a parts replacer until you know for certain that the part is bad.
It depends on what make and model,( but if it is a rear wheel drive) it will be located on the passenger side at the very rear (side) of the motor. Most front wheel drive cars are located on the drivers side, where you could lean over the left front fender. You may want to post what year, make, and model.
easy, just take the outer tie rod end nut off,cv axle nut and strut bolts, swing it out, some you might have allen head bolts at the tramnsmission also, very easy job.
I have a 19934x4 bought it with 4 wheel drive notworking. indicator lights for 4x4 would notlight up but transfer seemed to be shiftin ok. frontaxel woul ot ingauge. I repled the front axel actuator an works fine now no problem. actuator is on the passenger sid back of the front axel pigand has a plug, mine was 2 wireroundpin plug but some have a flat pin 4 wire plug. 70 dollars at NAPA. wasa realy simple replacement didnt even need to jack up the truck. the actuator h a pin that electronically puses out engauging te front axel. a easy test is to put the truck in 4 wheel high. holdthe brak and givei little gas ad havesomeoneelse stand to the side ofthe front of the truck and see if the front axel spins. ifso th actutor is te most likely prblem. hope this helps.
vacumn pod on the front axel is stuck on. Jack up the front wheels spin both tires at the same time and see if the front drive shaft turns. If it does the 4x4 on the axel is engaged. The front drive shaft on these should not turn when vacumn pod is disengaged. YJ's have a split axel on the right side inner axel shaft.
