Run wd1600 via ide-usb problems

I have bought a wd1600 caviar hard drive, it came in a box which was wired to usb. so to make it work you simply plugged it in to usb port and it would work as a mass storage device, the power was supplied by a power cable into the box and which had a connector that resembles a svideo cable. i have sadly broken one of the pins and the hard drive no longer is readable, the power light comes on when i plug it in but it doesnt seem to function when connected via usb to my laptop. i dissconnected the box and then plugged the hard drive into my dell computer via the ide cable, 40 wire,(tho in the box it had an 80 wire.)
i moved the jumper the the slave position on the drive yet when i plug it into the secondry IDE on the dell mother board it doesnt seem to be recognised at all. can someone help me to install this so i may get my data back? the hard drive doesnt seem to make any noise and is heating up on the back wen the power is connected. i have alot of university work i am tryin to reclaim including assignments so any help would be most appriciated.

Just replace the case the drive is in. You can get them from stores that sell computer parts like Fry's Electronics. There are many online sources too.

SOURCE: usb device not recognised

First try this OPTION:

Possibilities:
1) One of your USB devices have faulted, or is causing a resource conflict (or similar)
-- Remove all USB devices, and reboot.
2) Your USB chip/ports have been damaged.
-- Find a spare HardDisk or bacjup your data and re-install Windows and see how that goes.
3) Your Power Supply Unit (PSU) isnt supplying enough power to your PC (usually caused by a Video card upgrade). Try a more powerful PSU ... 400watts should do the trick
4) Bad memory (RAM) can cause wierd problems. run memtest for an hour to make sure your memory is ok

It seems that many people are still getting the 'USB Device not Recognized' problem from time to time. Unfortunately there is no easy fix.
Firstly, it's recommended that you make sure every one of your motherboard drivers are completely up-to-date, but you probably already knew that.
In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.
Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;
HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb
Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.
A long shot perhaps, but I recall having similar problems with a USB hub built into my Microsoft keyboard and adding this key seemed to solve it. It wouldn't hurt in trying .
Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.
Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;
1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)
2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.
3. USB Root Hub(s)
4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)
Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.
Hopefully some of this may be of help, let us know how you get on.

IF STILL NOT WORKING JUST BUY NEW EXTERNAL ( JUST EXTERNAL NOT HDD )

SOURCE: WD Elements USB drive not recognized

Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.

  1. Click Start
  2. Right Click My Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Disk Management
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.

Testimonial: "Brilliant solution. Worked like a charm. Thx."

Can I connect a WD1600 Hard Disk via USB connector for external drive?

You need to purchase an USB hard drive adapter case and install your hard disk inside this case. Take your hard drive with you when you got to a computer shop so you will get the correct IDE or SATA USB adapter case.

I wish to us a WD1600 (caviar) hard drive fopr extra storage in my pc the drive came from my old PC there are eight pins to choose from. Where do I place the jumper?

Well, if this hard drive is SATA and looks like this:
ikayos.jpg
Then you don't need to worry about the jumpers at all, the hard drive is ready for use in your PC.

However, if it's IDE, which looks like this:
ikayos_0.jpg

You will need to move the pins to the "Slave" setting, and on Western Digital drives it is one set of vertical pins going away from the 4 pin power input, the above picture is set for Slave mode, and can be used as a reference.

Need an enclosure for a WD1600, model # WD1600JD-40HBCO

There are many places to get enclosures for hard drives. I would recommend looking for a USB 3.0 (the new standard for hi-speed USB, and backward compatible) interface, and for an enclosure that includes an active cooling fan.

Otherwise, it's take your pick.

Hope that's helpful.

May be but check your HDD power connection port pins. If there is an loose conn. you shouldn't afraid of it.

Reformatting without dataloss

You can't unless you can back it up with a usb stick that would be big enough to hold it.

Ide cable that has dimension 2350 is too small for the drive

You could have it mistaken for the floppy disk drive data cable. It is much smaller than a regular IDE cable and therefor wouldn't fit on an IDE HD.

Vista OS computer does not see WD400 connected externally via USB to IDE cable.

Purchased a USB to IDE cable. Looked like it was communicating with the hard drive (WD400) my computer did not see the drive. (Vista OS).

Western Digital customer service recommended that I change the jumper pin to position #4 on the hard drive and install inside the computer as a an additional slave drive.

Worked perfectly.
