Your AT Control Unit is fried. There is one capacitor, and one resistor that fries on all of these faulty, defective little boxes. If you were to remove the box, which is under the passenger side carpet, and look at the chip board inside, you would probably see a little 33uf 35volt capacitor with black burnt gunk all around it.

Certain VIN numbered Hondas recieved these ATCUs from a factory in Georgia, which was responsible for the faulty capacitors. I replaced mine yesterday with a $20 junkyard variety. When I looked inside of it, the chip board was a different color, indicating it was made in a different factory. If the chip board in yours is green, it's probably of the Georgia variety. My new one had an odd-looking orange chip-board, with no blown up looking components.

After installing the new Unit, I now have all gears and no stupid blinking obnoxious (S)-light, whereas before, I had the same problem you're having. It works wonderfully now. Good luck finding one though, because I saw about ten cars there that had already had this box stripped out, which tells me that this is a very common problem among these cars. A brand new one is $187 from Honda, and a reconditioned one is $120.

At another site similar to FIXYA.com, I read of a guy that sent his box to radioshack, and they tested and replaced the faulty parts. This would still cost less than getting a new one, but you would have to wait for them to fix it. I plan on doing this to my old one, so I'll have a backup if this new one eventually does the same thing. I may fix it myself with a soldering iron, if I can find the right resistor. The capacitor though, is an easy find. Good luck if you decide to try this. I have a feeling that you would feel very satisfied if you were to replace two tiny little parts and fix the whole car.

I also suggest that you search the web, especially FIXYA.com, for other people having the same, or similar problems. You will find that you are not alone in your struggle to drive a fully operational, properly functioning Honda Accord. Mine has 257,000. I hope yours makes it that far plus another 100k or more. God Bless You, and good luck.

91 accord shifts hard

You have transmission issues, the first thing to do is have the fluid changed in the transmission to see if that improves the hard shifting and then go from there.

Honda accord 1991 shifter has a sport shift option, button. It will not come out of sport shift. It has auto trans.

It sounds like your tcm (transmission control unit) is going bad or it already is, at times when this happens you may also experience the trans not shifting or it gets stuck on a higher gear and will have to shift manually from 1-D.Usually this happens when it's really bad.

Honda 1991 pops out of 2nd consistantly

Is it a manual or auto? If it is a manual, you can shift from 1st to 3rd, and this will prolong the life of the tranny. The 1-2 synchronizers are going out. If it is an auto, you probably have an internal issue that may or may not last too long.

91 Honda Acc Auto gear box is stiff

This is most ofthe related to lubrication of the cable, end bushings, and linkage at the tranny... especially at this age

You may want to disconnect the cable underhood and see if the floor shifter is mroe comfortable...

If the stiffness remains, I would suggest replacing the cable (lubrication is possible, but messy with the cable installed in the vehicle)

If your shifter move VERY freely, then likley the end bushing or linkage at the tranny - simple "maintenance" cleaning and lubrication should get you there.

IF the shifter at the tranny does NOT improve with external ceaning and lube, you may wish to flush/change your tranny fluid - many people do not perform regular changes and the position of the shifting bell-crank on the honda will allow dirt to accumulate and that shaft will bind as it passes through into the tranny.

1991 Honda Accord tranny not shifting..

the first thing that needs to be checked is the fluid level. it may have a leak and has now gotten too low to move car. check the trans oil dipstick with vehicle running in park on flat ground. if it is low, top it off with dex lll trans oil and see if it moves better. if restored to normal shifting, ck for leakage. dont fix the leak first without checking for normal shifting down the road, you could be wasting time and money if any damage has occurred.
