Homelite xl chainsaw won't start. I took out spark plug, put in some fuel and if fired right up. But won't run.

Did you check for spark when the plug was out? It should be blue and snappy. If not, you need to expose the flywheel assembly by removing the left case cover, then remove the stop switch wire from the ignition module. If now sparks, check the stop switch and connecting wire for grounding. If still no spark, replace the ignition module. Use a thin businees card for a gap gauge--turn the magnets under the module, insert the card into the gaps, then loosen the mounting screws and let the module stick to the magnets. Tighten the screws and rotate the flywheel to remove the card, then turn the flywheel one full rotation and check that the gap doesn't close up at any point. If the original test had good spark, then pour some fuel mix into the plug hole and attempt start--if you get several pops, then check the fuel system. Start with checking the fuel filter which will commonly plug up over time and check the fuel lines for decay or damage. Does the primer button pull fuel into it when pumped several times? I suspect you have a fuel delivery problem or a dirty carburetor. As a chain saw runs out of fuel they often revv slightly (running lean). HTH

If this grand old lady were mine I would part with a few $(40±) for a tune up and and maybe an additional $20 if carburetor needs rebuild at my friendly neighborhood Stihl dealer. They perform pressure tests most homeowners cannot. An undetected air leak can destroy your saw. She deserves better.

this may be dumb but, have you cleaned your air filter? check that first. then recheck your needle settings according to your manual.

Your probly going to have to take the Carb. Off take it apart clean it good, reassemble it and put it back on.its not hard, just pay close attn to where all the parts came from. If you have never done anything like that b4, I suggest taking pictures as you go. If you tear any gaskets you'll have to replace them.
