My memory card won't be read by my computer

Will it read other cards? If so then it may not accept high capacity cards, or need to be reformatted. If high capacity is the issue the the only thing you can do is get a smaller card.
If format is the issue then take a computer and a memory card reader (if the computer does not have one internally), insert the memory card into the reader and go to whats ever disk utility you have select the memory card and format it to the specification of your device. Done. It may be a task to format a memory card from windows so use some type utility or the command prompt if you are familiar with using it.If it wont read any memory card then the reader built into the device has malfunctioned or not properly functioning--Good Luck.

To change the Info display format, follow the instructions in the "Info Display Format" section of the manual (page 120 in my copy). If you simply want to change the wallpaper image to one of your own, follow the instructions under "Wallpaper" (page 122 in my copy).

Have you tried using it in another device that reads/writes SD cards?
It's possible it is a counterfeit SD card. Some counterfeit cards don't work or are not the true capacity. If it it a name brand like SanDisk it will have a serial number. The counterfeit ones typically don't have serial numbers.

Unfortunately this isn't anything that can be necessarily fixed per se.

I'd suggest looking at Nikon's website and finding any applicable firmware upgrades. However, upon checking Nikon's website there are no available firmware upgrades currently.

Beyond that, I also recommend formatting your memory card (after transferring your photos to your computer) and possibly looking into purchasing a faster memory card. Memory cards have different write/read speeds which can affect the rate at which your pictures come up onscreen in the camera.

A couple things you might try.. remove the card carefully and check the position of the "lock" tab. Make sure it is fully in the unlocked position - not locked or a point between the two positions. Reinsert and try again.

It sounds lie you're using a card reader to download the pictures - try formatting the card while in the card reader via computer. The card should be completely empty when the format is complete. You can even try copying files to and from the card to make sure its ok and format again. When complete, try again in camera.

If the problem persists, check to make sure the card is on Nikon approved memory card list for use with the Coolpix L1 (provided below):

The list came direct from Nikon Support. Other cards may work, but only those on the list are approved. Successful use of other cards can not be guaranteed.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.


The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.


Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

You don't. Without a memory card in the camera, there are no pictures to get out. It's really hard to be nice when they ask these kinds of questions.
