I often sell vintage Timex watches which have a day and date feature. Setting the day and date feature can be a little tricky - if not frusterating if you aren't familiar with how to do it since most of the original manuals that came with these are long gone! I'll try to explain the process - please feel free to contact me if this doesn't make sense. 1. Pull out the crown on the right hand side of the watch. 2. Advance the crown so the time advances clockwise until the day is correct. 3. Rotate the crown so the time is going counter-clockwise (the opposite direction) until the date "clicks". (the day will click first, then the date). 4. Rotate the crown so the time is going clockwise again and the date will advance. 5. Continue this back and forth action of rotation until the date is correct. 6. Push in the crown and you're done! I'm considering making a video of this process. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in.
Hey, it sounds like your watch is just fine! A nice watch to inherit.
The small second hand on the sub-dial is your normal second hand.
The large second hand is the second timer for your chronograph feature.
It should only move when you hit the side buttons. One of them (usually the top plunger/ button) will start the Chrono timer and then hitting it again will stop it. The bottom button should reset the hand to the 12 o'clock/ zero marker.
If the large hand is not functioning at all then there may be something wrong with the watch; perhaps the buttons are not making full contact within the watch or the hand may be stuck and need repair.
Hope this answers your questions. Post more questions if need be.
Congrats on your new watch.
Dennis,
"Chronograph" is watch terminology for 'stop-watch'.
There are 3 small dials on the watch. The main dial has a minute hand and an hour hand. The big second hand on the main dial is not for the main time of the watch. It is for measuring seconds for the stopwatch.
The 2 small dials at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock will give you minutes and 1/10 of a seconds.
There are 2 buttons on the side of the watch.
Top Button: Start/Stop
Bottom Button: Reset
To set the chronograph to its default position, you would pull out the stem to the first position and push the buttons. Also, pull the stem out further to the 2nd position and push the buttons.
