SOURCE: Laptop doesnt find connection to cable modem

Don't Use USB, USB is SLOWER. Use a Ethernet Cable Just like your Neighbor's Computer. FOLLOW THESE STEPS 1 BY 1......Shut Computer Down, Disconnect from Modem, RESET Modem, Wait 2 Minutes, Connect Ethernet Cable From Modem To Computer, Start Computer Back Up & give a minute or 2 for them to communicate.

PS: If your Modem is a New Setup, make sure it's Connected On-Line or Activated through your HighSpeed Internet Service Provider. Most Important, USE ETHERNET CABLE, Not USB.

SOURCE: IP addresses work but URL don't

Hi,

you didn't mention which version of windows are using so i am going to assume that you have windows XP if that is not the case then let me and i can provide you with an alternate solution.

1. click on the start button
2. click on run
3. type ncpa.cpl
4. right-click on local area connection(if using ethernet cable)
5. single-left-click on internet protocol (tcp/ip)
6. click on properties
7. click on set dns servers manually instead of obtaining automatically
8. enter 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 as the primary and secondary servers.
9. restart the computer

if it still doesn't work
1. click on the start button
2. click on run
3. type cmd
4. click ok
5. type nslookup www.google.com
6. hit enter

and reply with the results.

I suggest you do not consider a dial up connection because it is very slow.

Try assigning your laptop a static IP. To do this in Windows:

  • Open Windows Start menu.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and thenNetwork Connections.
  • Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
  • Click Properties
  • In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.
  • In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer (try 192.168.1.110 to start). - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router (try 255.255.255.0 to start). - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway (try 192.168.1.1 to start).
  • In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses (or you can try your router's address, probably 192.168.1.1).
  • Click OK.

No ip address

when you say ip/config you mean wifi properties and internet protocol properties right ?
if so select obtain ip address auto and select obtain dns auto.
if thats not what you mean...goto control panel ..open network connections...click on ur network connection ...in the list at left select change settings for this connection...in network properties scroll to internet protocol..double click to open..select obtain ip auto and obtain dns auto.
there are other ways to fill in fields but you need relevant info..
there are programs which can show u ip's but most require a special driver.
incidently if you choose ip and dns auto you will not see ip address but when connecting to network you will see aquiring ip address please wait.
if for some reason you still cant connect go to a place where you know have free internet access and connect there then net connection will be configured

Laptop can't aquire IP address

This sounds to be a compatibility issue with either the wireless software or wireless card. Check to see if there are any updated drivers for the wireless card at IBM's support site. If there aren't any or the card still doesn't work after the updated drivers are installed, then you might try a different/newer internal wireless card, or a universal external wireless card for use with your home system.
