Hi. The router is shutting down the modem. It is a comcast modem. We are using the wireless router as a wired router, and about every 45 minutes, the modem just shuts down.

I didn't have this problem before I got the router. My modem never shut down before, but is doing so since hooking up the router. If I disconnect the router, the modem is fine.

My router (Belkin F5D8236-4) has a problem too. It restart itself every 30-40 minutes. I bought it in January 2009 from Staples and I wasn't smart enough to return it inside 14 days from purchase date. All this time I was hopping to find a setting or a new firmware that can fix the problem and I search and tried a lot of settings that I found it on different forums to ease this "pain" but with no success ... and finally I finished returning to my old router which is also a Belkin (but a good one). It seems that either the hardware or the software of this router are wrong designed/engineered. I wrote today an email to Belkin for support but I'm not expecting to get a resolve answer. Sad... Now I'm in marketing for a new wireless router (avoiding Belkin brand) but it seems that many wireless routers (no matter what brand are) have issues and bad reviews.

I would check it anyway. It may have been working OK, and then coincidentily gone south when the router was hooked up.

And make sure Comcast is OK with your using a router. They may be doing it, since you say it seems to die pretty consistently at 45 minutes or so.

Were any of the internal settings, other than wireless security, changed when the router was installed? Maybe the thing to do would be reset the router, then make sure only the security settings are changed. You can set it up using exactly what you have now, and you won't have to do anything to the wireless AP's.

Does the connection fail if its connected directly to the moden. If so then its probably the modem thats causing the issue. If its newer you can probably have it replaced under warranty.

You may also want to check your router. look in the device manager at the router and check the speed for your network. Is it at auto? Depending on the other settings in your system this might be ok, but try switching to another speed. Usually auto is the best but just give it a shot.

Have you tried connecting direct to the modem to see if the same thing happens?

If Comcast supplied the modem, I would have them come replace it.

Is the router shutting down the modem, or do you just keep loosing connection with the router?

Please make sure of the following

- You have authentication setup in your router (WEP, WAP, WAP2). This will ensure that you are not being targeted by malicious people
- Your power should be stable for both the modem and the router. Try to put both of them on a surge protector to prevent energy spikes that may restart your devices

I have F5D7230-4 router. Modem downstairs connected to DSL. Computer upstairs needs a wireless card to work This is a ''G'' router, but it only picks up signal upstairs with a ''B'' card which I stole...

The Belkin F5D7230-4 router should offer "Wireless G" connections,
unless you have used its built-in web-interface to only allow "Wireless B" connections.

So, if your "upstairs" computer, with a "Wireless B" adapter, connects, it will connect only at the slower "Wireless B" speed.

If you want "Wireless G" speed, you will need to purchase a "Wireless G" adapter.

Trying to connect a wired network wirelessly to a router

No. You'll need to run a "cross-over" Ethernet cable from one of the "LAN" ports on the "downstairs" router, connecting to the "WAN" port on another router that you will need to buy, and place "upstairs", and connect the 4 devices to the 4 "LAN" ports.

Or, run a long "straight-through" Ethernet cable from your DSL-modem (or cable-modem) that is "downstairs", and move your wireless router "upstairs", and connect the 4 devices to the router's "LAN" ports.
Your laptop "downstairs" should still be able to connect (wirelessly) to the wireless-router that is "upstairs".

Router will not connect to internet

You will need to assign a different ip address to the modem - Iam assuming that both the router & modem are using the same ipaddress 192.168.1.1? If that is the case, then assign 192.168.1.2 tothe modem.

Belkin Pre-n wireless router

Check your device to see if it is due for a firmware upgrade. Esp. depending on your ISP, log into your device that you have from your ISP ( whether dsl modem, cable modem, etc.) and then follow whatever procedure it needs to determine your current firmware version.

Belkin wireless router installation with a laptop that has an internal modem

Depending on the operating system that you are running, and if you have the appropriate wireless cards, you should be able to do this either with or without the modem. If you have the modem connected to one computer, and wireless cards on both computers, then your best option would be to just connect directly from one computer to the next. If you can tell me the answers to these few questions, I can help you get on the right path.

What operating system are you running? Windows XP? Vista? Macintosh?

Do both of your computers have wireless network cards? If not, then which computers have the wireless network, and which computer has the modem?
