I have a coby dvd958 home theatre system and a 42LG50 lcd tv, I have one hdmi cable that runs only from the home theatre system to my tv. Sound and picture are great when watching dvd's, but I need to find out a way to watch regular tv and use my hometheatre system with sound, like to watch sports..Ive tried the digital coaxial hookup, nothing..tried old way av inputs...nothing..Our area is still mostly analog , I hook regular coaxial to the back of my tv...Not hooked up with any digital packages, just standard cable. I thought that by using that hdmi cable, it would take care of everything...NOT..Any solutions or ideas?

1 thing to keep in mind with HT (home theater) systems is that when selecting a particular function that the input to the receiver matches the output to the TV/monitor. Example, you can play dvd's just fine because the HDMI output from the 958 matches the input to your monitor. Many consumers are under the mistaken impression that the home theater receiver can convert the HDMI to some other format, i.e. digital co-ax or optical. This is not the case. To use some other input the receiving device must have the same function & that particular input must be selected in order for the receiver to amplify it.
That being said, when you previously tried the digital co-ax connection did you specially select that input on your HT receiver? If you didn't, the receiver would be expecting to be processing audio from the HDMI input & would ignore the digital co-ax. You may also need to select that output on the monitor in order to active it, which, in most cases, would be odd. I was attempting to access the owners' manuals for these units & decided to respond with basic info hoping to get you up & running. Respond to this post if you have any additional questions.

I wrote a
long post & it got lost on this site. they have their posting issues. I'll
try to make this short.
1.You
have digital broadcast available from your local tv station. ignore whoever is
telling you otherwise.
2. ignore
the other posting. you won't have true SS (surround sound) using the analog RCA
jacks.
3. don't
confuse the terminology. the antenna coax connector is not the same as the
digital coax audio connector. plus it doesn't help that the chinese don't translate
to english very well.
4. make
sure you're using the correct digital audio cable. the connector insulator
should be orange. if it's not, buy the correct cable.
5. on the
HT, select option 3 & 48Khz for the digital audio. also while we sort this
out, try turning off the tv spkrs to minimize the chance of over-driving them.
6. you're
not going to like this next part. your coby is not the best system or mfr on
the planet. they don't recognize that system anymore. can't even find a users
guide. can you scan & forward the users guide to me? it would help. i
advise people not buy from places like home depot for equipment like this. and
i advise them to buy from retailers with clear return policies to avoid issues
like this. i also advise against buying dvd/combo systems like this one as well
because it limits your options for upgrading & if the dvd portion fails
then you're out of luck.

Having access to the coby manual makes all the difference. The digital coax connection on the coby is an OUTPUT, not an input. So unfortunately the only choice you have left is to use the analog audio RCA jacks on the tv & the coby. Do the following:
1. On the back of the TV connect to the audio output RCA jacks match the colors of your audio cable. Refer to pg 10 item #8 & pg #47 of the LG manual for the correct jacks.
2. Connect the other end of that audio cable to the coby using Line 1 input. Refer to pg 6 item #2.
On to the set-up. For now I'll be refering to the coby manual. Refer to pg #9 for these 2 steps. On the coby access the audio set-up pg. Find the analog audio set-up, downmix & select the "5.1" option. Next go to digital audio set-up, digital output section & select "all". what this has to do with the next step is puzzeling.
Now refer to pg #11. Still under the audio set-up menu, go to the 3D processing pg & under the PRO LOGIC II section select "on". Aways leaving it on is your best bet over-all. These next few steps are set for personal listening tastes. Play around with different selections to see which you like best or as the source changes. "Auto" would probably be a good place to start. The manual explains the differences of the options. Notice that "panorama", "dimension" or "center width" are only available when the mode is set to "music". The reverb mode is fun to play with. I wouldn't concern myself with HDCD option & it's attendent filter option, unless you have any HD CD's on hand.
Now refer to the LG manual pg #88 thru 100 for the audio set-up. Pg #93 tells how to turns off the TV speakers. The 1 thing that the LG manual doesn't mention is whether the audio output from the TV is fixed or is variable. Here's how to find out. start out with the LG & coby volumes set to minimums. after following the above steps, tune to a local tv channel, then slightly turn-up the volumes on bothe device until you hear the audio. then try increasing the only LG's volume to see if the coby's volume increases. if it doesn't then the output is fixed & you control the volume only with coby. if it does increase then set the volume on the coby for a comfortable max level & control it with volume on the LG. That should be it. As you alluded to in an earlier post this stuff is over most people's heads. the digital age is great but it adds complexity that most don't grasp or want to deal with.

Just 
run red and white composite audio cables from the audio out ports above the AVin1 ports on the back of the tv to one of the audio input ports on the home theater system, remember which input port you connected it to and when you want to watch tv with the home theater sound just switch to that input on the home theater system.

I ve tried the audio input ports as stated in the manual...no sound..if I try using someo other audio ports on the back of the tv..i get LOUD...sound that cannot be controlled from the tv or the HT..It just blasts...so, I cant use that...As far as input selected...I don't recall there being any special input on the tv to select...Ive been told that not having a digital line coming in could be my problem. In looking at my Coby manual..all it says is this...."use a coaxial cable to connect the coaxial output of this unit to the coaxial input of the power amplifier". and it gives you a picture..duh...Also in the Digital audion setup: I have 3 options...1. is Spdif/off: there will be no digital audio signal output(coaxial off) 2.ALL: the digital audio signal output will be in its raw format 3. The Digital audio signal output will be in PCM format.
LPCM OUtPUT: When digital output is set to pcm only, this item is available. Select a sampling rating for the analog audio output. there are two options, 48KHz and 96 KHz...NOTE: Some amps don't support 96khz sampling which will affect the coaxial output...
ENOugh said, SO..i have my settings on ALL.....frankly i don't understand any of that stuff...that is the way the whole manual is...dolby digital setup this....prologic that..........I ve always hooked all of my own electronics up....now its getting to be over my head a bit......Any more help????

Ok...jhall1793...when you say use the correct digital audio cable..are you talking about the digital coaxial cable? The end has an orange ring around it...So, I take that as being correct..as far as the HT system itself..I received it as a gift from work....So, I got for nothing actually.....But, what ive seen on the internet is that the systems are much to be desired, alot of little problems...Ok..as far the manual...I can email you the pdf file that I have, if you would like? I just need an email to send to..or is there another way?..I don't have a scanner anymore, so I just email everything.....Let me know..I will not be doing anything with the system until Saturday sometime..Iam seriously thinking about looking into another system down the line...Thanks again........[email protected]

One more problem, any way of eliminating or reducing the hissing in my surround sound speakers when they are not in use?..I can hear a little bit of sound from them, but too distorted...When playing a dvd, they work great when needed...It just gets annoying..
im trying to hook the cable up and cant get it off digital mode and I want it on analog mode
