I have an NEC Powermate Eco. The hard drive crashed. How can I replace it and what type can I replace it with?
Hello
instructions on how to remove and replace the hard drive are on this PDF document.
http://support.necam.com/mobilesolutions/hardware/Desktops/eco/819-201002-000med.pdf
You will need a pdf reader to open the document, if you are unable to open it download a pdf reader here

Can you remove the hard drive from the computer, write down the details that read on top of it, and also if you could look at the connectors and tell me the details so I can make sure I direct you at a proper replacement.
Thank you,
Ekse
Ok, That seems to be the cd drive. Is there another drive under the cd drive? I'll have to look into this more then.
The document said that, you can remove optical drive and hard drive by doing that, so I suppose the hard drive is below the cd drive. What does it look like?
Ok I see, there is just the cd/dvd there. The hard drive must be at another location I will look into it.
Hi again,
If on the stand you only have the optical drive and there is no room for a hard drive there. Then it must be inside the back of the display.
Heres the user guide which has instructions on how to upgrade the ram.
http://support.necam.com/mobilesolutions...
we aren't actually upgrading the ram, but this should be helpful in takeing the computer apart and finding the hard drive that is inside.
See page 9.
The manual also contains the contact details of nec support incase you don't want to go in yourself to find out where it is, you could email [email protected] and wait a day or two for the answer.
Looking at the picture of the computer, the System board shield would need to come off to see the internals.
I can see a wide flex cable that might be connected to the hard drive. but I've never been inside this computer or used it so I may very well be wrong. but in anycase if you want to find out where the hard drive is. It should be standard IDE - cheap and easyly available. I suspect you may need to remove the system board shield to see everything inside.
I don't see it on this picture
do you see this style of connector?
or this style of cable?
Looking at your picture
Two possible cables there. Whats on the other ends?
we may have to take the whole thing apart to find it. Let me know what you find at the other end of that silverish cable and that other flex cable.
the picture didn't come out very well, too small. can you take the hard drive out? can you get me some details from it and a picture possibly? from connectors also? and I'll tell you what you need.
Thanks.
Hi
Its a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive - ata
heres the documents for the drive if your intrested
http://sdd.toshiba.com/techdocs/MK2018GA...
These driver are available on ebay for example
http://computers.shop.ebay.com/items/Dri...
The computer should support atleast few hundred GB drive. but if you want to be on the safe side the 20 and 40GB drives should work 100%. bigger drives should also work but if they don't then the bios doesn't support that big of a drive. 20-40GB is a safe bet. you can try bigger.
Anything Else?
Thanks,
Ekse

I removed the front bay as directed by the instructions. Are the optical and hard drives all in one case? The case reads, "TEAC CD-224E"
MODEL VER. -CN4
PART NO. 1977047C-N4
SERIAL NO. 2451026
Thank you.
Ben
Once removed, the unit looks just like an optical drive.
Can you point out the hard drive
Found it!
Info on the drive states the following:
MK2018GAS
HDD2168
There are 24 pins on top and 23 on the bottom to connect to the the cable.
You ROCK! I was able to purchase the new hard drive. Unfortunately, the bios only supports up to a 40G drive and I couldn't go any higher. Thank you.
Nice pics, how about upgrading/replacing the bios on the NEC Powermate Eco? I need to replace the bios, I am getting the 1-2-2-3 beep instead of a boot up. Substituted the hd and ram, neither did the job. Know what chip it is? And how to flash the bios? There is no floppy drive. Will flash thumb drive work?
