Cannot transfer photos to XP from SDHC Ultra II Card

Is your card reader compatible with SDHC cards? While the card will fit into an SD-compatible card reader, it will not work unless the card reader was designed to be SDHC-compatible as well.

Buy an SDHC memory card-reader. Take out the SD card from the camcorder. Plug in the SD card into the card-reader. Plug the card-reader into the USB port of the PC.
Transfer the files with explorer.

I guess you have a built in card reader? Is there any chance your camera SD card is SDHC? Some card readers including built in types and those that you connect to a USB port have trouble with the later and faster generation SDHC cards but are happy with plain old SD cards.
If you are using an external card reader, does it work in another computer? If it does work, then the problem is with your computer.
If you have a built in reader, can you borrow someones external card reader that you know and does work with SD and SDHC cards?
Can you try an older SD card in your current setup? If that works OK then it's the issue with SDHC that is your problem.
Easily fixed by buying yourself a $10-20 external card reader

No, it's a hardware issue. Your 8GB card is an SDHC card (the HC stands for High Capacity), but the card reader in your machine is clearly only compatible with the older type SD cards. SDHC devices will accept SD cards, but devices designed solely for SD cards cannot read or format SDHC cards.

There is no firmware update for this, your only fix is to buy an external reader compatible with SDHC cards for connection via a USB socket. Most new readers are fully SDHC compliant, but check the specs for shelling out your hard-earned...

either your pc card reader or adapter for sd card is at fault here....but try this way connect your camera to pc (using usb cable)...go to my computer see the new device (camera) click on it to open ...your pix are there now copy & paste (click & drag) to your folder on the pc...hope this is helpful...feel free to rate

I'm having the same problem with a Transcend 4GB microSDHC card / microSD adapter. I have also found it probably has something to do with the card reader...either the card reader is an SD card reader trying to read an SDHC card OR the card reader is not able to read high-gigabyte SD cards (over 1 GB in some cases).

You didn't provide what netbook you got, but most netbooks today got built in SD-card readers. If your netbook does, the best solution is to remove the card from the camera and insert it into the netbooks card reader. The Canon G9 supports SD-cards, as well as SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HC MMCplus compatible cards. I suggest using a SD or SDHC card.
You will not need to install canon software to access your pictures if you use the card reader, you will be able to access and copy/move them from the memory card in explorer (or equalent if you use Linux on your netbook). Also, it's a much faster way to move pictures from the camera to the computer, because the card reader interface is a lot faster than the USB interface to the camera.
If your netbook does not have an internal card reader, you could buy a SD card with built in USB, such as this one: http://www.cdrdvdrmedia.com/ultra-sd2-card-2gb-sandisk.html This SD card behaves like a normal memory card in your camera, but plugs directly to an empty USB port on your netbook. The card will be accessable as any removable storage, in Explorer (or equalent if you use Linux).
A third solution would be to get a cheap USB 2.0 card reader. Almost any cheap USB 2.0 accepts SD cards, and would be a lot faster than connecting the camera to the netbook with a USB cable.

When You Insert your SD card into the internal card reader, then the SD card is not recognised by the system and the SD card drive doesn't show there. The problem can be because of driver issue, system issue and device issue.
To fix the problem you need to go at device manager if there is a yelllow sign in SD card controller, the problem is most probably caused by a driver issue. Then you need to update the driver. You can also download the driver for your card reader.
Also, check if your SD Card is broken. You can also check it into different devices port.
If it is detected then you can backup of your data.

remove the SD card from the camplug it into your PC. If it has no card slot, get a USB card reader. Less than $20 usually. Make sure the card reader can handle the SDHC (hi-capacity) cards if you plan to use those. If XP recognizes the card it will appear like an additional hard disk. Open it in windows explorer, check the directories until you find your video or photos and copy those to the hard disk.
