97 wrangler wont drive forward in 2wd. just makes a loud grinding noise but will drive in reverse

Was just driving down the road and Jeep started to squeal really loud then started making a loud grinding sound. Pulled over and when I tried to take off again it made the loud grinding sound and wouldn't move. Then I put it into reverse and it would move. Then put it in 4lo and it would move forward and same with 4hi. Any suggestions on what could be the cause of this?

SOURCE: 4wd makes loud noise, also pops out of 4wd

Sounds "used and abused"!!! Likely you have more than one problem. Transfer case may need linkage adjustment or rebuild. Grinding from where? Wherever the noise is, look for a problem. Pulling can be from any number of front end component failures. Your best bet is to give everything a careful inspection or have a reliable shop go over it for you. There are so many variables in this I couldn't possibly give you any real answers!!!
good luck!

SOURCE: 06 Jeep Wrangler making a loud clincking or grinding when turning

Hi there,

By any chance is the transfer case engaged?

A locked drive train could account for the noise being made only on turns.

Bring the transfer case to neutral then back to 2-high.

Or try to duplicate the problem by putting it into 4-high. THAT way the dealership would know exactly what to look at.

SOURCE: My jeep wont move in any gear

If your transmission is low on fluid it won't move the vehicle. Sounds like you had just enough fluid to get first gear going.

Jeep will not go back int 2-w drive

my guess... is car is 4wd not AWD, like my wrangler
and non go back to 2wd from 4wd if car is sitting on dry pavement.
you never stated road conditions ,so i guess at dry road and not offroad.
Partime 4wd is only for ICE or offroad, if you read the lost operators guide it tell you that.
the solution (TSB subject) is to drive to dirt and switch to 2wd.
if no dirt, jog car in a straight line, and try , forward the back the try.
or jackup one wheel. and try.
its locked in to 4wd due to WINDUP, (bad driving)

My jeep dies electrically when driving down the road

Could be a faulty connection with the battery cables, a bad ground, or any number of things. What do you have to do to get it started again ??

TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

2001 Jeep Wrangler 5spd.... 2wd is out!

Either you have broken something inside the transfer case but equally likely is that you blew up the spider gears in the rear differential. I'd remove the cover and take a look. If they're broken, it won't be difficult to see.(smaller gears inside the center section) And, they are replacable
Hope that's all it is!
Good Luck!!!

Jeep 4wd auto trans

Place the trans in nuetral then put the transfer case in 2HI.
when you drive on the road always have the transfer case in 2HI UNLESS you have a transfer case that has an alltime 4WD option
