Free Online repair manual for Snow blower

I have a Lawn Boy model number 55382 that I am trying to figure out how to take the front auger shaft out so I can tear the gear box that turns the auger apart to see what is wrong with it.

  • Brian Anderson Feb 02, 2009

Whoever had the snowblower prior to my neighbor buying it didn't maintain it very well and now when it runs the front auger turns some, then doesn't so I am thinking either the worm gear is jumping off the gear or the gear on the shaft is worn down. I would like to take off the two halves but the housing is welded together from the factory and not bolted so in order to take the halves off I would have to pull the gear box out enough so I could pull halves off since the shaft the halves bolt on goes about halfway to the outer edge of the housing.

If you want to take apart remove bolts from front auger block bearings both sides , remove setscrew from large pulley, pulley must be pushed towards eng then remove moon key from shaft and remove set screw from lock bearing facing pulley , everything pulls out front auger and all

    not a fun job .

How to change shear pin

With the motor OFF, the shaft shouldn't rotate, so you should be able to rotate the auger by hand until the holes line up.

Snow blower auger stops in snow

There are cotter pins on the second stage blower shaft. I would inspect these. Also, check sheer pins in front auger assembly.

I have a 3 yr old 26" snow blower. I ran the machine up against hard packed snow/ice and now the auger spins freely and all shear pins are still in place. The secondary impellor functions fine. I...

I am going to assume the belt is good if the impeller it running. You can check the belt by removing the plastic cover in the center of the snow blower.
With the unit safely turned off reach in and turn the blower by hand while putting a little resistance with your other hand on the impeller. Does the shaft from the impeller to the gear box turn?
Does the shaft that the augers are attached to turn? If the impeller shaft turns but the auger shaft doesn't, the gearbox in the front is bad and will have to be replaced.
I the auger shaft turns, check your shear pins again. Sometimes they will break but still stay stuck in the holes. Actually take one out and check it.
If it is a Craftsman you can get a manual from managemyhome.com and parts from searspartsdirect.com. You will need the model number of the snowblower. The number looks like 247.123456.

I have a new Troy Bilt Snowblower. My father ran over a large extension cord while blowing snow, which in turned wrapped the cord around the auger shaft ends. I can now only get one side of the auger to...

Your snowblower has 4 shear pins keeping the front auger safe. Use the manual to locate them if you are unsure where they are and how to change them. Since your snowblower is new I am going to assume you have the manual.
Your snowblower came with 2 spare shearpins. Check up by the handles and see if they are still there. If you don''t have them go to your local Lowes, Sears, or MTD repair shop to get new ones. DO NOT USE STANDARD BOLTS!

The drive shaft coming out of the gear box is one, solid piece all the way across the snowthrower so if one side is turning there is a 95% chance it's the shear pins.

I have Toro 826LE model 38620 S/N 250010001 & up snow thrower; one side agur will not turn under power and free wheels by hand. The problem occured this morning, there was no indication of a problem...

It sounds like you have sheared a roll pin. Look at the auger that is not turning, on one end you will see a hole, there is a steel pin that goes through the shaft, I am pretty sure that pin has sheared and allows the auger to spin freely on the shaft. You may have to find a small punch and drive out the broken piece before inserting new one. Seeing how the auger has been spinning on the shaft you're gonna have to line up the hole in the auger with the hole in the shaft. Look at the good side to see alignment. Hope this helps ya.

I have a ariens snow blower model 1128 when i engage the impeller turns and the shaft to the auger gear box turns but the augers don't turn. the shear bolts are not broke either

Have you confirmed the bolt integrity completely through the shaft? Also check the gearbox for proper lubrication or gear failure.

I recommend contacting your nearest authorized service center, or you can download operators and service manuals typically online by performing a simple Google search using your make, model number and part needed.
