SOURCE: wireless connection of netgear wireless router for compaq laptop

Sometimes firewalls on your computers can cause connection issues. I had the same problem with my home network. I had norton internet security 2008 on both systems, but the firewall settings on both computers had to be adjusted to allow the computers to talk. If you have different brand firewalls on each computer, you should consider to switching one of the computers so that it matches the other.

Another thing you want to do is log into the router's web utility and check to see if the wireless settings are blocking wireless connections in some way. You also want to make sure the ssid broadcast is enabled.

Finally, you really should consider using security on your router, so wireless connections would be password protected. I suggest wpa personal.

SOURCE: can not connect netgear wireless to mini laptop

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

Since your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

SOURCE: Reset password

Resetting to Factory Defaults
Hardware reset: Push the reset button on the back of the router for 15 seconds.
Software reset:

  1. Type 192.168.1.1 in a Web browser.
  2. Click on Backup Settings.
  3. In the Revert to Factory Default Settings click Erase. IMPORTANT! Do not try to go online, turn off the Router, shutdown the computer or do anything else to the Router until the Router finishes restarting! When the Test light (looks like a check mark) stops blinking, wait a few more seconds before doing anything with the Router.
What is the Router's Default IP Address?

I have just bought anew laptop cant get onto internet it wants me to type in security key i dont know what this is can you help me please?

  • If your are trying to connect via wireless from your laptop to the Netgear router, most likely it's requiring you to input the wireless security key(usually it's WEP or WPA encryption).

  • Access the router's setup page by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 in the address field of your browser(IE or Chrome). On the login use the default username and password(admin, password).

11_25_2011_1_21_04_pm.png
  • After logging in. Look at the main menu on the left, click on Wireless Settings, from there you can check the Wireless Key. If the wireless security is set to WEP, use the available Key code but If it's WPA, what you need is the passphrase.

11_25_2011_1_26_22_pm.jpg
Type the Key or Passphrase on your wireless laptop and it should connect to the router.

Hello, I dont think you need the drivers for Router. And first of all you need to connect your modem to your router through ethernet cable. And after connecting your modem, configure your wireless router by typing this IP address in internet explorer: 192.168.1.1 The user id is admin and the password is password. Then detect your broadband connection by using the option in the router. Try connecting your Laptop to wifi after setting the connection.

Netgear locking

I'm assuming we mean wireless security?

Run your internet browser - Internet Explorer or Firefox type the router address in the address field (usually http://192.168.0.1)

Default user name of admin and default password of password

Click the Wireless Settings link in the main menu of the DG834GT firewall. There are a number of options available with WEP the most basic. For basic protection select WEP, put in a passphrase (anything you like) and the router will provide you with 4 keys based on your passphrase - take a note of the keys. When you try to connect to the router wirelessly (laptop, game console, etc) the router will require you to input one of these keys to verify your access and that should be it.

For further information to go the netgear website and have a look at the manual - http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/dg834gt_manual.pdf

Need to add a new laptop onto my wireless router wgt624 v.3

By default, Netgear uses admin and password. The username is always admin, the password is the only thing that changes. If it's not that, there is always the reset button in the back of the unit.
