Vacuum will not turn on

The vacuum cleaner was working fine one minute and then I shut it off. I could never get it to come on again. I can't see any reset button or fuse listed in the parts decription. The switch seems to be working fine (although it could have gone bad I guess) and the power cord seems fine also. Is there a fuse located on this machine (and where is it located) that may have blown?

Kenmore Model 116, behind the Vacuum cleaner there is a Motor Reset switch which you need to press.
1. Make sure the Vacuum Cleaner is unplugged.
2. Press the reset button gently in with a pen.
3. Plug back the Vacuum cleaner and it should work.

It was working fine and them just stopped it is not that old and was not making noises HELP!!

Vacuum cleaners have electric motors in them that require proper airflow to pass over them to keep them cool. Many vacuum cleaners have a thermal (heat) sensitive shut off mechanism built in. This mechanism should prevent the burn out of the motor. If you run a vacuum too long with a clogged hose or clogged filters (especially bagless vacuums) or clogged bags, that is essentially choking the vacuum for air and not allowing it to breath properly. This will cause it to overheat and shut down. Most of the big box store purchased vacuums have very thin wires in the motor windings and can only do this a few times before the motor completely fails. If your vacuum has been shutting down, then cooling off and restarting after about 30 to 45 minutes, then shutting down after only a few minutes of use, your machine is probably clogged up or the filters are compacted.

The vacuum cleaner works for a few minutes then shuts off. After a few minutes it will start again, but soon shuts off again.

There may be as many as three air filters in the vacuum. Remove and thoroughly clean all of them and try again.

The vacuum stopped working while i was using it...did all the troubleshooting tips.. still not working.

Sometimes the vacuum will overheat, if this happens the vacuum will shut down to protect it from damage.

Unplug the vacuum, and let it sit unused 30 minutes.

Please let me know if this has solved your problem.

I know nothing about your particular vacuum, but many vacuum cleaners these days have
safety cut out's, which causes the motor to do exactly what you describe. Sadly blockages, faulty switches, over stretched cables, carbon brushes etc could also give similar symptoms, so sounds like a job for the repairer on this occasion. Get a quote first if you can.

Hi, I have a Hoover Bagless myself. I also have worked professionally fixing Vacuum Cleaners. There may be some material caught between the roller end and the end bearing or the edge of the roller compartment. This could be causing excessive friction causing the motor to overheat. Like a piece of carpet fabric that wrapped around the end. However, that is not supposed to happen to a vacuum cleaner. If you turn the vacuum cleaner over, exposing the brush, you may find it. And be able to remove.
HOWEVER: This is supposed to be a premium Vacuum. It has a very high rating. It certainly is still covered under warranty. I would take my receipt, be safe, and exchange it.
I hope this helps,
Have a Happy New Year

Vacuum cleaner shut off if you try to use the hose or off beater

With the cleaner on. move the cable where it enters the cleaner through a rubber grommet. There is a common fault with these cleaners that the cable breaks at that point. soon the cleaner wont work at all until it is rewired.

Hi there

All Dyson vacuum cleaners are fitted with a thermal cutout, which will switch off the motor if it becomes too hot. This is normally caused by a lack of airflow to the motor, i.e caused by a blockage or a dirty filter.

I would make sure that you have completed the full blockage procedure and have thoroughly washed the filter and see if this helps.

Kind regards

Hoover Recalls Self-Propelled Vacuum Cleaners
---
Consumer Complaints
Hoover Company Inc. has agreed to pay a $750,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it failed to report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) the sale of vacuum cleaners with defective on-off switches that can overheat and cause the vacuum cleaner to catch fire.
In April 2005, Hoover conducted a recall of 636,000 Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners because of defective on-off switches.
In June 2004, after CPSC received notice of several vacuum cleaner incidents, the Commission staff requested Hoover provide a full report of incident information. In July 2004, when Hoover submitted a full report, it had notice of 260 consumer incidents, of which 141 involved reports of fire. Additionally, there was one report of a minor burn injury.
Hoover first learned of a vacuum cleaner switch on one of these units overheating and melting in April 1999.
Federal law requires firms to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public, presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or violates a federal safety standard.
These Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners are plastic, upright vacuums with the brand name Hoover and words "Self Propelled" printed on the front of the product.
Only those Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners manufactured between May 1998 and November 1999 are included in the recall that is the subject of this penalty.
