Backwards watch? The watch runs backwards at normal speed and a new battery does nothing. Is this normal? What can be done?

Yes, normally if a watch stopped running it needs a new battery. Well, you can bring it to the nearest watch shop in your area.

I have read the instruction for this watch and I am surprised how little they tell you!

The description of the watch does not say if it is automatic or battery driven so I shall give you two alternatives to try:-

1) If it is battery driven, then there may be a wedge under the winder to prevent it going into the running position (to save the battery while it is on the shelf). Pull this out and push the winder home.

2) If it is automatic, then it is mechanically driven by a spring and needs to be wound up. This is done by either turning the winding knob or gently shaking it from side to side form some minutes. Once going, such a watch needs to be worn daily to keep it running. They will normally run for 1 - 2 days before stopping when not being worn.

Hi if the hands are running backwards then this would suggest the battery is in the wrong way round, take the battery out and turn it round and you should find it will be working normally.

some cheap batteries have got the terminals the wrong way round so the possitive will be the negative and visa versa so try and avoid buying cheap batteries as they wont last long and could do more harm than good.

That depends on where you are and on if a professional watchmaker is doing it (so the job is done right) or if you are taking it to a watch breaker at the mall or local jeweler.

A watchmaker will not only change the battery but will make sure the watch is resealed again which could require new gaskets. A watch breaker doesn't care about such things and will charge almost nothing but your watch will not be guaranteed to be water resistant from one of those people.

Water resistance is important. Everyone perspires and that moisture will get inside a watch if it is not sealed. It may not seem like a lot of moisture to you but honestly, the parts inside a watch cannot stand moisture. They corrode and rust within a few days even with the smallest amount of moisture. Once rust starts it cannot be stopped by drying the watch out. The parts with rust damage normally have to be replaced.

Now on a $10 watch no one will care about water resistance or for that matter replacing the battery most times. But on an expensive watch such as yours this is important because having to replace the parts of the movement is expensive and so you can expect to pay more for a professional battery change.

It is a battery problem. All you need is new battery for your watch. After fitting the new battery your watch will be back to normal. Rate me, plz.

Hi dgcgo. My advice, unless you're a watchmaker, is to take it to an authorised dealer or trusted watch repair shop, and get it done properly. The speed on automatic watches is adjusted by means of a tiny regulator, but the adjustments are minute and the watch is then usually bench-tested to make sure it is running ok. It's an expensive watch, so worth the effort, although if it's new, you can probably get it done under guarantee. Cheers; Eagle58

It's not ok. Usual specs are +/- 1-2 secs a month, no more.
Try battery change first and if it doesn't help, go and see your nearest watcmaker to solve the problem.

It would be easier to tell you more if the age of the watch was posted, but not knowing that I am going to assume it is less then 3 yrs old and in good shape. He goofed! Never be afraid of asking someones experience level when working on something that belongs to you, find out if they are just a clerk in a jewelry store and are getting paid minimum wage and care more about their paycheck then your watch, OR if they have been doing it forever and care if you come back again! "IF" the watch is older then I assumed, or in questionable condition (a few bumps and scratches) then it may have nothing to do with the fact that the battery was just replaced, it really could be it's "time" to expire, pardon the pun!
