SOURCE: Installing a Leviton 5225 switch with outlet.

A switch is wired using the hot wires only, the black wire. It is simply a break in the line so that when the switch is off no power flows and when the switch is on the power does flow.

You are correct that the middle outlet would have two black wires and two white wires.

If you want to tap into that middle outlet and run power up the wall I suggest you look into some wiremold products. Go to their website, or any home depot and check it out. Get back if you think I can help you further. I am an electrician.

SOURCE: How does the illuminated light work inside a

The neon lamp inside of the switch draws very little current (milli, or mico amps) so there is no significant current flowing to ground.

As for your real question, there are several various types of 3-way pilot switches:
Load on: Pilot on
Load off: Pilot on
Some 3-way pilot switches have an external lead which allows them to be configured either way.
If both of your switches are the same type and are wired correctly, they should work the same.
If you suspect that one is defective, try swapping them.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much. It turns out one of the two was simply dective. Thanks!"

How you install a light and plug in in one switch

1) Copy following link for wiring combo device:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-switches.html#combo2

2) Neutral wire is required for outlet to work.

3) Outlet will be ON all the time.
Some combo devices can be wired so that switch controls outlet, but other models cannot be wired so switch controls outlet.
Look for break-away fin located between dark screws on combo device. If device has break-away fin, then switch can control outlet.

Replacing one thee way switch with a three way switch and an outlet. the switch works fine but the outlet only works when the switch is off.

Switch is wired wrong.
But not sure how it's wired

Copy following link for wiring 5245 combo 3-way switch outlet.
Also look at illustration just below that shows no-neutral.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-switches.html#5245

You replaced old 3-way switch.
Wire that connected to dark screw on old switch, connects to dark screw on 5245.
Wires that connected to other two screws on old switch, connect to 2 brass-colored screws on 5245.
Neutral wire must connect to silver screw on 5245.

Hello: I have a Levitron White decora 15 amp combination switch: I need to get a copy of the schematics as someone threw the schematics away... Geesh! Note The MFG part number is the same as the...

Hello.
There is no schematic shown online for that specific product.
Leviton shows a spec sheet on their website but no wiring schematic.
http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?sitex=10026:22372:US&item=8938

However the spec sheet does show the screw terminals on one side of device that indicate this is ordinary combo switch-outlet.

Open following link for illustration of combo switch-outlet:

The problem that usually confronts people when they replace light switch with combo is that the combo requires additional neutral wire to power the outlet.
Neutral wires are the white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut that are pushed to back of electric box. Connect a short piece of white wire to the neutrals, and connect that wire to screw on combo device. If your electrical box does not have these neutral wires, you can get the outlet to work by using bare ground wire instead of white neutral, but I would never recommend this action as it violates national electric code and would not pass home inspection and would cause risk to electrician working on that same circuit who was unaware of a code violation.

I am installing a Leviton combo switch and tamper resistant outlet. The outlet appears to have plastic behind the holes. What do I do?

Just plug in an appliance. Equal pressure from _both_ of the prongs of the appliance opens the plastic plates. Inserting a _single_ object into a _single_ slot (such as what a child may try to do with a metal object) will not allow the plastic plates to open.
That's the criteria for an outlet to be considered tamper proof anyway.
