The sound is completely out in mono mode, and distorted in stereo mode. I do not know what caused this problem. Is there any way to fix my headphones?

Assuming that you've tried plugging the headphones into a different device to check it's them, not the CD/MP3/whatever, that's at fault, then the most likely problem is a break in the screen of the headphones' cable. If you have a multimeter, you could confirm this by measuring resistances. If you look at the jack plug, you'll see it has three conductors to it called (reading from the end) tip, ring and sleeve. With the headphones set to stereo, you ought to see a few tens of ohms between sleeve and tip; the same between sleeve and ring; double that between tip and ring. My guess is that in your case, you'll only get a reading between tip and ring, with the two readings involving sleeve both showing open circuit. If you can see gross damage on the outside of the cable (where one of the children has ridden over it with a office chair again), you probably need to replace the whole cable. If there's no visible damage, the failure is usually just at the point where the cable goes into the jack plug (all the stresses when you move about are concentrated there). You can often prove this fault by wiggling the cable around while pushing it into the plug and seeing whether sound is intermittently restored. Solution here is to cut the last couple of inches off and fit a new jack plug. You will be able to buy lightweight screened stereo cable (if you need it) and a stereo jack plug of suitable size (the standard sizes are 3.5 mm and 1/4" - referring to the diameter of the sleeve) fairly cheaply from a hobby electronics shop (is Tandy/Radio Shack still on the go out there?) If you have to change the cable, use the way the old one is fitted as your guide to fitting the new one to the headphones. Either way, you'll need to fit the new jack plug. Don't forget to put the cover over the cable before you start to wire up the main terminals. Jack plugs usually come with solder tags. Of the two in the middle, the one on top is connected to tip, and the one underneath is connected to ring. The tag for sleeve is combined with a cable clamp usually just as a single hole halfway up the clamp. Strip the cable so that the insulated wires will reach the tip and ring solder tags, the bare screen(s) will reach the solder hole on the clamp, and the crimp grip at the top of the clamp will work on the sleeve of the cable. Double-check that the cover for the plug is already on the wire. Solder the red wire to the tag for ring (the lower of the two in the middle) Solder the other coloured wire (usually blue) to the tag for tip (the upper one in the middle) Solder the bare wire screen (both of them if there are two) to the cable clamp at the point where the hole is drilled through it. After all your soldering has cooled, use a pair of pliers to bend the arms at the top of the canble clamp around the sleeve of the cable and crimp to secure it all. Screw the cover onto the top of the plug. That should do it. A.

Sound very poor

there could be a few issues. It could be the speakers themselves. I believe this tv has an audio out. I would hook it up to a stereo and see if it that improves it. It could also be something internal like the amplifier. You have a couple options but I would just use a stereo for sound. If you still need more assistance let me know. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.

I get static and distortion in Stereo mode.

if you are reffering to a radio fm receiver, the issue is the signal strength is too low.so the multiplex transmission cannot be correctly unscrambled.mono reduces the cross channel interference.
use a high gain 12 db or above external vhf antenna to solve this problem

Can't change from MONO to AUTO mode

Hello
Can't make sound from mono to auto is your problem I thinks and posts this solution.
Hit the "Menu" button and surf through, come to "Sound Adjust" window.
The settings allow you to change and adjust sound in your TV. There are Bass, Treble and Balance control to adjust to your individual taste.
To adjust them
1. Press Menu button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select the desired item.
3. Press => or 4. Press EXIT button when finished.
When adjusting the parameter of "Balance" control, always set it to mid position to get stereo sound from both speakers. If it is set to any extreme end, there will be no output from the speaker of that side, and will hear as mono.
If you press "0" [Zero] button, you can reset the sound settings to it Factory settings.
To select 'Streo mode;
1. Press "Menu" button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select MTS [Multi-channel Telivision Sound].
3. Press => or [The ON AIR arrowtells you if a broadcast is in stereo AND/OR contains the SAP.
Press "Exit" button when finished.

Keep the TV in stereo mode to get the best sound quality. The sound will work in stereo

mode even if a certain broadcast is in mono sound only.

Choose the mono setting to reduce excessive noise on a certain channel or broadcast.
Selecting SAP will allow you to hear an alternative soundtrack, if one is available.

There are many different "listening modes" integrated on my Kenwood VR-7070 6.1 channel receiver. But i only get both front speakers to work when in "mono" mode. Is there an easy fix?

There is not a "fix" for this selection, MONO is basically a single channel output so there is no seperation for various speakers like left or right which is a stereo effect, mono is like a single speaker sound so you are fortunate to have the sound from 2 speakers but they deliver the same sound.

Why aren't my games playing on the nintendo fc twin?

The FC Twin connects through an RCA connector, and can be hooked into a surround sound system. When using stereo and surround output from these systems, NES sounds and music may seem very different from their typical mono output. Using output modes that properly generate mono sound, either through a single center speaker or cloned to multiple speakers, the sound output sounds mostly identical to the original NES. The FC Twin does not produce some sounds faithfully, even with mono output; sound effects in the Super Mario Bros. series games will for example immediately seem different. Nevertheless, some later models of the console produce NES sound much more faithfully than units made closer to launch. Recent models produce sound with complete fidelity.

42" Sharp Aquous audio; Mono vs. Stereo

no. that is not true. the person you spoke to obviously didn't know what they were talking about. you mean to tell me that everyone that has a cable or satellite box with a stereo or hd tv is not going to receive stereo sound? really, think about it. you only need a cable box( for now ) if you have premium channels (hbo, showtime etc). you can connect the cable line right into the tv if you only have basic cable. look at the back of your cable box. if you have a red, white, & yellow audio/video output, then the box is stereo.connect these outputs to your tv. this connection however is not hd.you will need a hd box with a hdmi cable for hd .To put the tv on stereo mode, there should be a way via the menu and/or the audio button on the remote to get it off mono and put it on stereo. your manual should at least show you around the settings of your tv.

Installing PA5422 in two channewl mode

Since your first paragraph is leading to your question paragraph, I'll adress that. "what is the difference amongst the MONO/STEREO/L+R switch options available on both Front and Rear AMP X-over Sections of the PA5422?" Mono is same sound output on each channel, stereo is what you want as it gives out stereo sound, and L+R is most likely blending the channels together.
