Your best bet is to go to your local hardware store and purchased a stud finder which are usually not too expensive
Runa an earth magnet over the wall. It will find nails and screws that hold the drywall to the studs. An old way to find studs.
You always have a stud on one side of an outlet. Take off the cover and see which side of the outlet the stud is. Now all you have to do is measure 16'' center from that stud to find the next one.
The stud finders are not expensive but you can sometimes use a magnet to find the nails. Also you might try shining a flashlight across the wall. The putty put over the nails will sometimes show up. Last resort is to tap on the wall and try and hear the areas that have support under them.
