Will the broken pre-motor filter housing catch affect the overall suction of the vacuum?

There is a wand catch that holds the attachment pole to the unit. It's above the power switch. It easily comes off and Sears has it for a pretty cheap price like $3. Without this wand catch the handle attachment pole does not stay put. Good Luck

You have power so it can't be the switch or power cord. It is most likely the motor or the cord from the switch to the motor that is the problem. Start by checking these areas first.

Unscrew this one screw to do it. wiggle the loose bit. until you can fit a flat head screwdriver into the gap the catch fits into . Dunt the bit out. Screw back into place. Push the catch in from the front until it clicks.

I will list the spots to check this vacuum for clogs. First see the first diagram I uploaded.

1. First thing is to remove the canister.
2. Then you will see in the diagram "A." Press that button and pull the hose up and check for blockages. Make sure to check for light through the hose to guarantee no blockages.
3. Now tilt the vacuum forward and pull out the U Bend Airway and inspect it as well (3rd pic in diagram)
4. Now squeeze the valve release catches to remove the airway and inspect the valve for blockages. (4th pic in diagram)

1. The diagram above is the pre motor filter many forget to check.
2. Press the filter release catch and pull the filter housing out.
3. Remove the filter.
4. Wash real good and let dry completely.

• Now the one thing that tends to go bad on these vacuums is the automatic air flow adjuster. When the vacuum is upright the pathway for suction is automatically on the wand. After some good use the little disk in there snaps and the air flow stays restricted in what ever position the vacuum is in. I have contacted Dyson a few other time and they do not sell this part. It is a factory fix only or I would give you the instructions to do it yourself.

Have you tried washing the filters? The pre-motor filter (the one in the plastic housing) can get really clogged. Hold it up to the light, if you can't see through, it is full of dust. You need to really scrub it with a brush to get the dust out (or buy a replacement). Just a rinse will do nothing. This is something Dyson is not telling you in the manual.

When the Cyclone Assembly on the Dyson is not spinning around, it usually means that you are loosing suction somewhere. This can either be caused by a clog, suction leak, or dirty filters. I will give you detailed step by step instructions along with pictures on how you can diagnose this.


Possible Problem # 1. Turn the vacuum cleaner upside down so the brush roller is facing upwards. I found the easiest way to work on it is to put it on a counter top or work bench. On the left hand side behind the roller brush you should see a flexible transparent hose that goes from the motor to the agitator housing. This hose actually has a lot of strain on it when the vacuum cleaner is in the vacuuming position with the handle down. When the first few series of Dyson DC07 models came out, they didn't make this hose long enough, so when the handle was in the reclined position, it would put too much stress on the hose, and cause the hose to actually crack, usually right where the end of the hose that goes into the agitator housing. Examine your hose and see if you have any visible cracks in this hose. If you need to you may just remove the entire hose assembly by pulling on it. It will easily come right out of the machine so you can inspect it better. Here's a picture of where the hose usually cracks:

Possible Problem #3. Dyson's in general are prone to clogging. There are a few clog ports throughout the vacuum cleaner that were added there due to Dyson prototypes becoming clogged at these points. Here are pictures of how and where to check for these clogs. Simply remove the suction port covers at both of these locations:






Possible Problem # 4. The Dyson DC07 has two filters on the vacuum. The first filer is the pre-motor filter. This filter is located on the right side (if you're standing in front of the vacuum) underneath of the of the cyclone assembly. There is a filter catch that holds the filter and the filter bracket in place. Simply press the filter latch, and remove the plastic circular part that comes off. In side of this plastic part you'll find the pre-motor filter. This filter is washable, but if it hasn't been washed recently, this could be the source of your suction loss. Here's what a clean pre-motor filter looks like, compared to a dirty filter:



The second filter in your Dyson is the HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is also known as the post-motor filter, or it's located after the motor. This filter typically doesn't have any effect on the suction, but you should periodically open it up and take a look at it. Despite the bogus claim of a Lifetime HEPA Filter. As you can see in the picture below, this filter gets filthy. When this filter is this dirty, it prevents the air flowing through the filter, which causes the air to look for other ways to escape, causing the dirty air to escape unfiltered. A dirty filter can also take away from the life of the motor. Here's how you can access the HEPA filter.

First remove the dust bin completely from the vacuum cleaner. Take a flat head screw driver, and right where the dust bin was sitting you'll see a groove. Put the flat head screw driver, and pry this groove off. Here's a picture of that:

Also on both the left and the right side, there are two more grooves that need to loosened before the filter can be removed:



After loosening three grooves, one on the front, left and right sides, the HEPA Filter cover can be removed. Inspect the filter to see if it's dirty. Here's a look at what a dirty filter looks like compared to a brand new filter:



I'm pretty sure that one of these solutions will help you with your loss of suction, and the cyclone assembly not spinning.

The way your Dyson DC17 is designed, there is a suction divert mechanism that diverts the suction to floor when the vacuum cleaner head is pushed down, and then back to the hose when the vacuum is in the upright position. If you are getting suction from the hose when the vacuum is upright, but no suction after the handle is reclined, this is actually the normal function for the Dyson DC17.

You can check to see if the filter is dirty. The washable filter on your Dyson DC17 is located directly underneath of the dust bin of the vacuum cleaner. After removing the dust bin, lift straight up on the part the bottom of the dust bin rests on. This is where the pre-motor filter is located for the DC17 models. If this filter is not cleaned on a regular basis, then it can start getting clogged, and you'll notice a loss of suction on the vacuum cleaner.

This has a simple solution IF you have a air compressor with a high pressure nozzle. Outside the house, first remove the Dust bin completely and lay the unit down with the dust bin area up. now start blowing the nozzle at the hepa filter, Alot of dust will come out. Now start to rotate the filter while blowing the dust out. The filter will move one way easier, When there is no more dust reinstall the dustbin and check the suction and the rotation of the filter.

I had the same problem and so my husband took our vacuum apart. I cleaned what I could and discovered that there is a foam filter that sits below a dark gray cover immediately beneath the bag (on the floor of the inside of the vacuum). This is different from the HEPA filter. I cleaned this off (ours had a lot of dog hair on it) and placed it back in the slot. The vacuum is not making the noise anymore and the suction is even improved. I had not noticed the suction had deteriorated as the vacuum still worked well in my opinion. I hope that this helps and that you have the same problem. It was very easy to fix. I believe the noise was due to the impairment to the suction. Good Luck!
