There are a couple of things that come to mind.
Bobbin: wound with uneven tension. Try taking the bobbin, rewind that thread onto another bobbin and wind slowly. make sure the thread feeds onto the new bobbin evenly.
upper thread: catching on something or not flowing off the spool easily.
you're doing well, sounds like you consulted the manual and used your noggin, hang in there and let me know if this doesn't help. we can troubleshoot some more!
Else, there could be as simple as your needle bar is centered too far to the back. There are 2 little bolts (Below the presser foot lift on the back of the machine) that must be loosened while the needle bar is repositioned aligning the needle bar assembly.

It sounds like your machine is out of time. What this means is the hook that grabs the thread from the needle is not coming around at the proper time. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, have a trained mechanic look at your machine. Timing a sewing machine is not something that can be easily explained over the Internet.

Are you making sure that your pressure foot is up when you thread the upper thread? If it isn't then your thread is not seating correctly in the tension disks. It will then be loose and make a birds nest(mess) under what you are trying to sew. The other thing to check is which way you are putting the bobbin into the bobbin case, different machines do it different ways. Some want the thread to come out of the case in the same direction as the slot on the case and some want it to come off in the opposite direction.

Probably when your son broke the needle he knocked it out of time. You will need to have a sewing machine technician to repair that.

When you have that hook drive gear back out turn the wheel until the needlebar is in its highest position. The bar with the teeth that the gear fits onto should be all the way to the right. Now slide the hook driver gear back on. You can lay the hook back in and slowly turn the wheel. Watch that the point of the hook on its upwards stroke is coming slightly above the eye of the needle. When it does this you will be in the correct position to put the screw back on.

Did you change your needle to a new one? If it is bent or has dropped down, there will be a problem like you are describing. Or you may have bent the shaft for the needle, hopefully you will be able to fix it yourself.

I had this problem and it is very easy to fix!
With mine I looked at it for about half an hour, and all I needed to do was put the bobbin case back in,(how it fits normally) and then hold it and turn it anti clockwise until it clicks, it may be quite pressured to do but ive heard a lot of people having this problem and thats all that needed doing!
