It's just a Western Digital 320GB SATA harddrive,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WESTERN-DIGITAL-320GB-WD3200BPVT-22ZEST0-HHBVJHNB-SATA-/170612627298

$229??????
I almost fell out of my chair! lol!
A 320GB SATA harddrive that is 2.5 inches across in width, (Regular laptop size) is W-A-Y cheaper than THAT!

SOURCE: Error message at startup !!

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology.

If you want lots of details on what it is, and does, take a look at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fix this since it's a hardware problem on the hard drive. The drive may last for years or it may die tomorrow. At a minimum I would back up everything you care about on a regular basis.

If you found this information helpful I would appreciate it if you would rate this solution. I hate to beg, but over half of the solutions I've posted have no feedback. I'm not paid for this I'm just trying to help.

SOURCE: Seagate 100GB Hard Drive for notebook SMART failure

First try virus scan/remove. Most computer users wish they could get an early prediction like that !!! Try to optimise computer, remove needless junk. By the way, 100gb hard disk drive prices crashed over the last two years.

SOURCE: ACER SMART failure

SMART means self monitoring and reporting tool, this is the option which performs certain test for the status of hard disk health, if its coming it means condition of your hard disk is not good, its better if you immediately back up your data and replace it, by the way you can also disable this warning through the bios, just disable the smart feature in hard disk

SOURCE: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 4: Hitachi-(S1)-ToshibLaptop

that will be expensive. i just went to microcenter and asked them, they said many hundreds of dollars just to look at it, then like 1600 for the cheapest recovery...

I would

1. stop using it immediately. (after an error like that, you may have only minutes of life left on it)
2. get a 25 dollar external enclosure to put the drive into. If it's IDE make sure you get an IDE enclosure, if SATA, get SATA compat. external enclosure.
3. get another computer, o rgo to a friends house, etc, and try to read your data on their computer after plugging in your hard drive inside the external enclosure.
4. if you can see it, rush like mad to copy the data thats important to your friends computer before the drive is 100% dead.

microcenter and similar stores have external hard drives at $129 dollars for a terabyte. BUY ONE! :-)

Good luck

PS: rumors go around that if you freeze the hard drive in your freezer for an hour, it helps get the data off, dont know if this is in fact true. Once the drive is dead, it's dead. You cant do much about it unless youre willing to part with a lot of money.

Primary Master .
This is where the hard disk parameters are entered for the primary master IDE/ATA device, the first drive in a modern IDE system. See the hard disk section for details on what these terms mean and how these devices are set up. The various settings for the drive are discussed in detail in the IDE Setup / Autodetection section. The default setting for this on a system with IDE autodetection, is usually "Auto"

SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.
