I have this same issue with ten M300W projectors - they all started doing it at the same time. I've pulled out the iris unit though can't figure out what Thomas is talking about with regards to pulling metal apart. Any further info would be very greatfully appreciated.

The problem is that the motor sticks, if you unscrew the motor on the Iris unit a little, the motor should be able to move freely. You should be able to move the two metal parts back and through freely without any resistance. You could also try adding grease or oil to the gears, this could help a little too. I found that the Iris unit is also not needed, the projector will function without it, but the sensor on the Iris unit does need to detect movement when the projector starts up. Hope this helps anyone reading - thanks, Jack.

9 Blinks is IRIS error the motor can sometimes produce a clicking sound part number 24B17981. If you pull it out and manually move the metal apart the projector should come on and stay on

Hi Thomas, I have this same issue with ten M300W projectors - they all started doing it at the same time. I've pulled out the iris unit though I'm not sure what you mean by pulling the metal apart. The iris unit appears to be clean and undamaged. Any further info would be very greatfully appreciated!

The Iris unit has 2 metal bars that open and shut to allow brightness control. The open position is the home position. Open the bars apart and then refit the iris unit. It should then work as normal.

    ^^ this.
I tried cleaning my iris with alchohol, but the issue persisted. I opened it back up and loosened the motor screw slightly, and the projector booted up normally!

For me too, In my situation the opto interrupter was out of range.
I released the screw, then rotate the small circuit board. After that the projector booted normally.

Thank a million. Great work you have shared. I have faced the same problem in my nec m350x projector - 9 times blinking of status LED. As per you tips, Today I tried by moving the plate away (motor assembly). First time it worked. Second time same problem repeated. I understood the problem is due to opto-coupler for sensing the home position. So I cleaned the assembly with Petrol and refixed. Now the projector is working fine. So the actual motor noise was due to opto-couple malfunctioning due to dust. Once again thanks.

What part are you considering the opto-coupler?

  • Tom W Aug 20, 2020

You may get lucky and free up the gears and get it working, but this seems to work 1 out of 10 times. From my experience, if you move it back and forth and feel a spot where it hangs up a little each time you cycle it, the little gear on the end of the motor shaft has a crack in it and this changes the gear pitch, hence the hang up. Look very close between each tooth, you will see the shiny metal shaft through the crack. On one model I just split the little gear off at the crack, removed the shutter blades and set the assembly about half way open. This worked on about 5 units every time. Yes, you loose the dynamic contrast, but it still looks good and it works.

Crack in the small motor gear wheel was the fault here, too. Tried to micro-glue it but will probably not last long. Have ordered new iris assembly..

SOURCE: NEC NP1000 powers up, strikes, then shuts down

the expected lamp life is an average .. its not unusual to see early failures ... check the lamp connections to make sure they are secure ... check ventilation to make sure its not blocked by dust .. if there is a fan, make sure its working ..

SOURCE: Blinking status light

Replacing the lamp with an old one was helpful for me. Good news: the projector itself not faulty. Bad news: I have two projectors with the same issue at the same time (the lamps were replaced also at the same time) after only 400 hours of running.

If it is a lamp error try this:
When the lamp exceeds 2100 hoursof service, the projector cannot turn on and the manu is not displayed. Do the following:
For VT670/VT470 Press the help button on the remote control for a minimum of ten seconds.

For VT570/VT47 Press and hold the power and the exit buttons on the remote control simultaneously for a minimum of ten seconds. When the lamp time clock is reset to zero, the lamp indicator goes out. Hope this helps! :]

My nec vt48 projector gets hot and turns off. It gives off 3 beeps a few seconds after

This problem and the error beep codes indicate a lamp that needs to be replaced. The correct part number for the lamp is VT85LP. Basically the lamps are rated with a life expectancy of 2000 hours. At the 2001 lamp hour (3001 in eco-mode) the LCD projector will power on, but not display an image, due to the indicator requesting the lamp be replaced and the lamp hours reset (hold the help button on the remote for 10 seconds when powering it on).

NEC VT47 lamp won't light

According to the manual, yes . . .probably gone past the recommended hours of lamp use. Press the OFF or the HELP button on the remote for 10 sec, this will reset the lamp hours value and allow the unit to come on. If it don't, NEC will tell you that it has to be sent to a repair center.
