Platter not spinning judders but won't spin. Powers up ok though - lights all on

need to know if it powers up. Does it try to spin, do you hear it trying to spin? More than likely the on/off switch went bad. No, I am not referring to the ON/OFF knob. THere is a switch this engages when turned. The part is S601. You might also want to replace the Start/Stop switch as well. If neither work, then the issue is on the main PC board, and probably IC101, or IC201 with the problem. At this stage, you will have to have a service tech look at your unit.

So the unit powers up still? First and foremost check to make sure there is nothing forcing the platter to not rotate. If the platter is fine, and there is nothing holding it back, then you have a drive issue. More than likely one of the IC's (Integrated Circuits) failed, or it could be one or some of the other resistors which control the drive/platter on this unit.
Unfortunately, this is not an easy fix. You will need to take it to a qualified service center for repair. Make sure you ask the service center if they are familiar with the drive of the Technics SL1200MK2, many service centers are not.

There seems to be 2 issues with this unit. Usually when the platter speeds up very quickly, one of the IC (integrated circuits) are faulty and needs to be replaced. However, I've never seen the 33/45 lights come on in addition. So, perhaps the issue started with faulty 33/45 switches, and it then caused a short to one of the IC's.
This will have to be professionally serviced, as it is not an easy fix. There are various circuits on the main board which control the drive, so it's a matter of diagnosing which is the culprit. The 33/45 switches will also need to be tested/replaced.

Tonearm lift is probably a deteriorated belt. Google it, it's pretty common. The platter spinning might be due to a bad control board. You'll probably have to go to a repair shop to diagnose it.

If you remove the rubber pad from the top of the platter then you should be able to lift the platter off the servo drives' center shaft,
from memory the unit is not attached just held on by gravity,if the servo magnet is gone the take it in for a service and pay the man for his time,
My first problem on my 1200s was a pitch control issue and easy to fix, with a little cash, never use second hand parts unless you know what you are doing because when they fail on you while playing to a packed dance floor then youll get more of a supprise than you barginned for,
