Testing the BN96-00249A power supply in an Akai PDP4294

My set is about 4 years old and does not function. There is no picture. I have checked the fuse on the power supply board (BN96-00249A) and it is fine. Is there a way to check the various outputs to ensure the PS is at fault before I order a replacement PS board? Regards Tim

Same issue. I checked and found that I had no power out on CN804, all fuses were good. Upon closer inspection I found 2 burnt solder marks on the back of the board for C523, and C524. It also appeared that C524 had split and was oozing a hard grey substance (solid not wet) as if the component had burst. These components were brown in color and mounted at the top middle of PCB.

I am going to order the board and will let ya know.

Replaced C523, and C524 on my set and it's now working. Symptoms were no picture and no power coming off the power supply board, except for Vs. Other outputs were low or 0.

I repaired mine today. Yes you can check various voltages. The voltages are listed in the tv. If you open it up in the back, inside there's a sticker on the back of the panel which is a thick metal. It lists the voltages on it that the voltages on the power board should be close to.

Shaky/Unstable Picture

This is power supply issue, one or more of your filter capacitors either bursted and/Or over heats (this is why it becomes better when system cools down after turning it off for 1/2 hour..You have two choices.1. buy a replacement power supply may set you back a couple hundred dollars but it will be plug and play. 2nd you can replace these filter capacitors make sure the can handle 105 deg celsius not the 85 deg. celsius, if you know how to trace the bad ones and desolder and solder new ones on the power supply board, or hire a techinician to replace them for you. Good Luck...

Akai 42 in. PDP4294

The high voltage power supply for the plasma display has failed. It may or may not be on a separate board that could be replaced the owner. If you find a separate board, it may have its own fuse which you could check for continuity with an ohmmeter.

No Picture on PDP4294

Normally the sets have seperate power supplies for the input/main logic board and the HV which drives the panal (could be 2 parts on the same board). It sounds like you have a problem with the power board that drives the panal and HV. Check to see if any fuses are blown, if the fuse is blown, you can try replacing it, but if it continues to pop, then the main fets that drive the HV are shot and will need to be replaced.

No picture ; no sound

the red blinking light usually has a pattern that gives you a code to the possible problem.
Maybe you have a bad power supply board. You have to open the panel and do a few tests on the power supply's outputs to be sure.
It produces a variety of voltages for different parts of the tv ie. the plasma display panel and the audio system. The components supplying power to the audio system may have failed a year ago and recently the pdp.

plasma tv's are expensive to repair, most of the time you can get a better tv for the same price. You can reduce that cost by learning and troubleshooting it yourself.
