You have more of problem than firmware. Check your power supply, all connections, switches, to make sure the drive can power up. If they are good, the drive is dead. Not much chance of fixing it.

An old trick, that rarely works, is to put the drive in a freezer overnight. If the spindle bearings are what went bad, the cold may tighten everything up enough to where you can start the drive and transfer your files off of it. But do it fast!

Your computer should recognize the drive when it's plugged into the USB port. There is no driver . If the PC can't find and assign a drive letter to it then look at a bad wire between the hard drive and the USB port.

If you're using a desktop try checking the speed of your USB thru bios setup. Here's a sample below, Change fullSpeed to HiSpeed.
1. To access bios setup, press Delete on your keyboard. 2. Look for the USB configuration. 3. Just change the settings on USB Controller Mode nothing follows. 4. Save and exit.

According to the microsoft site your external hard drive which is the Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC doesn't need any additional software it is automatically installed when connected..Maybe try to connect it to other USB port I preferred you connect it at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't work try to connect your external hard drive to other computer if it still doesn't work. sad to say but the problem is your external hard drive..

take a look at the properties..by right click on its icon on my computer ..and see if it is not set to read only ...or right protected...cause this may cause the data not to be able to be changed or formatted ..If on properties the read only is ticked ..just clear the case ..and let it empty ...after that try to format it again in Fat32

Try deleting any partitions on the drive by using Control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management. now highlight the drive and right click and click on delete partition. Now create a new partition and see if it will do a full format on it. if not then its stuffed. you have no choice but to buy another drive.

Sorry but your hard drive has failed, it happens quite often on this type of portable drive.
