American Standard Carlyle Series toilet is refilling about 10 percent of the water in the tank every 20 minutes. Do I need to replace the flapper or the entire flush valve?

Start with the flapper. They tend to dry up especially with water that contains chlorine. Purchase the American Standard flapper if available for that toilet. Works better than generics.

it sounds like your flapper (flush valve) is leaking.
if you here your toilet filling up and no one flushed.
push down on flapper to see if you here the water stop leaking out. if so replace flapper. even if toilet is 1yr or less old. could be a bad flapper. hope this helps. duane :)

We have american standard toilet model 4260 that runs all the time. have replaced seal twice. toilet is only 2 1/2 years old. what do we need to replace?

if it doesn't fill, it's your flapper, if your tank is full then you'll need to adjust the float. take a look on amazon for those 2 parts, and read into reviews. here: Modern Shower Doors at Amazing Prices. cheers

Follow the link above, it will probably answer any questions you may have for your particular toilet. They are all different and without the model number, it's hard from my point of view to understand what you may need. Hope this helps you!

Have to flush 2 or 3 times to empty toilet bowl

hello, this is a standard toilet you will need to inspect the flapper that is the rubber flap that holds the water up in the tank it works when you pull the lever it pulls the chain upward and lets the water flow if this flapper is old it may not stay up long enough for the water to flow. open the tank top and flush the toilet see if this flapper is staying up long enough and giving the tank enough time to empty if not change this rubber flapper its inexpensive part.
if this is not the reason then you need to adjust your water filler valve there should be a small screw on top of the pivoting float arm
if you have to adjust it for the water limit line inside the tank this will be the proper amount of water needed to flush once completely

also check that the chain lenth on the pull lever is not pulling the flapper down quicker than its supposed to,

try this let me know your results
hope it helps
