I'm about to chuck my computer over the balcony...i finally got my audio working for my windows media player after downloading a new codec, and i restored my comp after deleting files that i shouldnt have, and everything works fine, except i think the computer overheats and it just shuts down randomly. i've detached the panels on the bottom but i didnt see any dust. the fans are running on boot up, and i dont know what else to adjust to make it work. ive deleted a bunch of pictures/music files to increase my hard drive memory, and it still freaks out and shuts down randomly. grrr. i'm really frusterated, but i cant afford a new computer. is there anything else i can do besides format the whole thing and start over?
Can you can do a virus scan and then a disk defrag
update windows
that should help you
make sure when your on its well ventilated if it's getting overly hot and shutting down could be another prob
i have had laptops that do get really hot
does it do it only when you have AC power plugged or even when your using battery
disk defrag
start program files
accessories then disk defrag
while in defrag sht your screen saver off
we'll see if that helps
your going to have to change settings for updating
what version windows do you have again
try to change your update settings through control panel
automatic updates
restart and d your own update through windows update
mcafee has a few different versions
without the pc in front of me its hard to tell but i think your going to need a new power supply if it completely shuts down.
you can take it to a small pc repair store and most of them will test your power on the spot at no charge

this is an old computer, my battery completely died ages ago, and i was doing fine without it. so its only plugged in. thats the other thing. when i click the button for windows updates, it says that its updating, but after a few minutes, it says that updates are ready for installation. i have mcafee, and did a virus scan but nothing came up. but i'm not sure, mcafee is difficult to navigate, it scans, but isnt very clear on what it has found.
what is a disk defrag?
i have windows xp.
