3-function control switch

The switch you bought may be wired different. You need to identify the incoming power lead this will be connected to a brass screw that should feed both switches, the light will be on one switch and the fan on the other switch. If you have a red/black/white wire going to light/fan the the red will go one switch and the black on the other switch. You have purchased a double switch with no jumper built into switch. You can correct this by placing a jumper wire between the switches, this will be your power feed from home now the 2 switches will work. You may get the fan and light position mixed, but simply reverse the wires on the switches. You are not the first person to buy the wrong switch, they all look the same.

It depends in part on the fan. Many but not all give you the option to run seperate feeds for the fan and the light, which is necessary to do what you want. If you are experienced with electrical work, you will be able to tell because the feeds for the fan and light will be pigtailed together in the small junction box built into the fan housing. You will need to run a new cable to the location where you plan to mount the 2 switches also... hope this helps

Right now a single switch turns on both light and fan.
You want to put in a double switch to control light and fan separately.

But the problem is there is not a separate wire to each the light and fan.
You need a separate wire to each, but the circuit wasn't wired that way.
Usually when the circuit is wired for separate control, there is a red wire that also goes to ceiling box.

Unless you run another wire to the ceiling box, it won't be possible to control light and fan separately.

Electrician can do this pretty easily if there is attic space above bathroom.

Ok you only have two switches, so you would use one switch for your bathroom light, and the other for both the fan and the light, the light will come on when you turn the fan on.Connect the incoming black (hot) wire to both switches. Then connect the black wire to the switch you want for your light. Connect the other black to the second switch that goes to your fan and light. Connect the three white wires together (neutral) Connect all ground wires together, and leave a pigtail to connect to the ground terminal on the light switch. If you want separate switches for light in the fan and fan, you will need another conductor and a three gang switch.

I think your goal with the 2 way switch is to be able to turn the landing light on/off from either the top of the steps or the bottom of the steps. When you run a one way light in with that circuit it will not make a complete circuit, hence the 2 way will not work. If your bathroom switch was in with the light switch at the top of the steps, you will have to seperate these two switches. Make the bathroom a switch by itself, and then connect the two way switches. If a circuit is not making a loop it will not work. 2 ways must make an uninterrupted loop, (the one way is interrupting the loop) in order to function properly. Hope this helps!!!

The wire to the ceiling fan are meant to send voltage to the fixture only and are not usually wired to control both the light and the fan independently. In order to do that, you may have to pull another set of wires to the switch box and then connect them to the light circuit in the box where the fan is. In regards to the other wiring that you mentioned, it makes no sense that the wires go to the stove fan and the bathroom fan unless those wires are source wires that carry the incoming voltage.

I suggest you cut 3 pigtails out of your black wire (about 5-6" each and strip them so you can put a nut to tie them all together on the main wire, then do the same for your grounds using green 5-6" strips of wire and then connect all 3 switches with the pigtails to their proper locations. This WILL fix your problem.

If you are not using a seperate switch to control the fan the blue and black go together and the white goes to white and the green goes to green. The blue wire is the fan power wire and the black is the light power wire if you are just using the switch on the fan to control the fan speed then the above configuration is the way it should be wired.

yes, maybe- if there is power in the switch then you can steal power from it.. Take off the coverplate and remove the switch. If there are two seperate cables in there with a black and white or a black white and red then there is power there.. You will however need to run one more single wire to the fan, and another switch. You can get a double switch that will fit in the single box..There is one other way to turn the fan on and off, but the light has to be on for the fan to be on, without running new wires. Get a simple pull cord switch and mount it in the face of the fan housing. Then find the black wire running to the fan and seperate it where it ties into the power. Connect the black wire from the fan to one of the wires on the pull switch (either one) and connect the power wire to the other wire on the switch.

bathroom fans require a mains permenant and a switched wire from pull switch for the timer to work
