I already spent $39. to get the following advice from the tech: spray it with compressed air - done. Unplug for an hour to reset - done. It is still doing the same thing.
Obviously the laser reader in the unit is picking up interference from dirt or misalignment. You may have to open it up to get to the aser parts to clean them.
Thank you so much for your reply. I do tend to think that it is something simple-ish like dust because it operates fine when it does play - and it is four years old. "Opening it up" sounds scary, but I'm game. How exactly does one do that?

Site is down. Not a good sign. I took it apart, cleaned everything I could comfortably see and I have to say that it's better - playing a whole song without a skip or a stop for example. However, it is just not working right. And it's at least four years old so it looks as if I will be playing one CD at a time on the primary unit until I can afford to buy another one - or until I find something better. I love the Bose sound but there is just too much going on that a normal person cannot get to. I mean, who builds a product that can ONLY be controlled by a remote?? I am annoyed that I paid someone $40 to tell me the things that I could have read about on here. I thank you so much for your help Leigh. I have since read that this is a problem that comes up a lot more than I am pleased with - yet no one can ever say what is actually wrong with it. It's a Bose problem and they don't seem to be stepping up.
