As phone is unlocked it should just be a matter of putting in the Giff Gaff SIM card and away you go.
If the the Giff Gaff card is a micro sim and the phone is a normal sim then convertors are available on either the high street or online for a few £'s to enable the micro sim to be used in the larger sim slot

If you can access the internet when on WiFi then the phone is not the problem. In either case go to your provider (phone service) and they should be able to tell you weather or not you have a data package.

You need to have a data plan, not just phone credit

Is your sim too big, or to small?
When to big, visit a phone shop and ask them to trim the card. The have special tools to do this, without damaging the vital parts in the sim.
If it is too small, check the box where your sim came in, because modern sim cards com in 3 sizes. You can put the frame around the small sim, so it fits in your phone.

There is no free unlocking for this mobile as far as I'm aware of, if you want to be sure just google.. however don't use the free reset codes as they will damage your phone most likely (get 'phone freeze').

Other than your service provider i.e. the company's who's sim card you are using no one else can provide you the puk code. Its very easy to get the puk from your service provider just make a call to them on their toll free number they will ask you few question like your name address and date of birth etc. and once you tell them your problem they will give you the puk code.
