most of the time for this to happen something would have had to been dropped or excessive weight on the unit ... it is possible over time the unit had a unseen hairline crack and the heat has caused it to become worse... the glass for these units are ridiculous in cost but can be repaired...
several online sites sell parts.... a few reputable companies are www.sears.com www.apdepot.com www.repairclinic.com
Sorry to hear your cook top is cracked. Unfortunately it cannot be properly sealed like a car window. Here is your part#74010843. This is a pretty pricey part and I suggest you use a professional on this repair who will warranty their work in case the glass is cracked again. Furthermore, there are a lot of pieces to take apart and fit back in. Side note* Be sure to check you owners manual sometimes you can get factory service repaired covered more than just the first year. If the cooktop glass had a bubble or imperfection that could have caused your crack to begin with. I wish you the very best of luck. Please rate me if this is helpful to you.
Only a couple things would cause this First if it is to tight in the opening. Next is there was a small crack on the edge somewhere and when it heated up or the slightest vibration expanded it similar to a small chip in a windshield that grows over time. This could easily happen during installation if not being very careful. And finally is a defect in the material, This is probally unlikely but possible look at the glass very carefully for flaws. If you find any see if LG will repair for free.
A small crack, turns into a big crack, Short of ordering a new piece of glass, there is no "fix" sorry. YOu can continue to use it, but eventually it will run across the cook top, and then shatter the glass... Better be safe than sorry.
Hello Welcome to Fixya My name is Huum, You can replace the smooth top !. But I will tell you not to spend more than half the price of a new stove. How old is the stove and what's the model number! Waiting your response.

The top can not be repaired. The glass must be replaced . DO NOT USE IT CRACKED!!!!!!!!!!!! This is very dangerous as it can explode from the temperature. Also this is a severe electrical danger as glass top units have exposed elements underneath. Any liquid at all can short it out and cause a fire. I don't know if it is worth repairing. I don't have the exact price for your cooktop but last one I priced was between $350 - $500.
The cooktop box has a metal flange. Make sure the cooktop when dropped into the countertop is resting on ther metal flange and not the glass edge by itself. If it rests on the glass alone the weight will cause the glass to crack at some point in time.
