My Brother Printer is giving a 5A error. It's not a paper jam, something about the print head. Try to use the built in clean function and it times out and gives the 5A error. I've read every online FAQ, & there no help there. I've cleaned the print head with a Q-tip and still 5A.... Unless anyone can suggest a fix, it looks like i'm on the market for another printer...

Great solution here,i was having the exact same problem to the point where i was going to send it back. When you select your paper under general setup on your printer, glossy, plain, inkjet.you must also select the same, glossy, plain, inkjet under printing preferences when you select what printer your going to use.

- Machine off
- Switch on the machine while holding down the “menu”button until all the leds are flashing on/off. Now you are in “maintenance” mode.
- press 80
- press the “mono start” button several times until you see “purge: xxxx”
- press “2783” in order to reset the purge counter. You will see: “purge:0000”
- press the "stop" button.
- press “99” to exit the maintenance mode.

The process to get to the print head will take you approx. 1 hour. Without being trained on it, there is a high failure rate upon completion.
The Scanner assembly needs to be taken off. Harness Cables for the Scanner need to be removed. The Upper Case Assembly needs to be taken off. Printhead casing and printhead tubing calbes need to be removed, printhead mainboard needs to be removed, and then you have access to the printhead.
Thanks
