I was too slow to post this first, however, it will add some detail to what Andyrst has already written?. Setting your drive as a slave is fairly simple, but there are a couple of ways to do it. Little class first: IDE or integrated drive electronics is the entire system that controls the computers drives and how data is stored and read. The typical computer has two IDE channels, each channel can control two IDE drives, a master and a slave. BIOS: Basic Newer computers use what?s called ?cable-select?, basically the IDE data cable tells the computer which drive is the Master and which is the slave. All you do is make sure the drive itself is configured to ?cable-select? mode or ?CS? (small jumpers on the back of the drive, default is usually set to CS) and plug in the data and power connectors. Older computers or custom built usually have the master/slave configuration you were referring to. One device, usually the hard drive, is set to master the other is set to slave using the same jumper system you saw on the CD drive. How do you tell? If it?s a Dell or HP cable select, if not you?ll have to take the PC apart look for the hard drive and look at its jumper setting to see if its set for CS or as master. Last step depends on who makes your PC and if you are replacing an old CD drive or installing a second. If you?re just replacing an old drive with the new chances are really good you won?t have to mess with the BIOS.

Oops, forgot BIOS: Basic Input-Output System. The core computer instructions that takes control of the PC when you turn it on. It tells the PC what hardware is attached and where to go to start loading the operating system.

I noted that you posted a similar question earlier. If we?re talking way over your experience level just let us know. Sometimes its hard to judge just where someone?s knowledge level is so just let us know what, if anything you don?t understand and we?ll do our best to explain better.

I dont know why but my screen position went wrong after u restart my computer and its not getting fix i didnt change any thing plz help i try to set it with my monitor but it didnt help :(

Go to the windows control panel and select the display icon. This will take you to the display menu where you can change your resolution. If changing it doesn't make a difference, then you may need to update your graphics drivers by going to the website of your graphics card manufacturer and downloading updates.

Want to install wd1200jb-75cra0 as slave drive in dell xps420 with vista operating system operating master drive. do i need a driver installed first before it will recognize the wd1200 as a slave?.

there is a jumper setting on the drive itself that determines master and slave. Look closely at it, there is always a diagram of the pins to connect or disconnect for master slave setup.

No longer needed with Sata drives...

I have connected my 300 gb sata hdd to my pc which already has a 160gb sata hdd set to master when i start up my pc they r both set to master but i am told sata hdds dont have master / slave settings

They don't have master/slave settings as only one SATA drive can connect to a controller, however some BIOS have a setting designed to facilitate older OS's like XP that don't always have drivers available for the newer SATA RAID controllers built into most mid to high end PC's. If this setting is enabled on your PC then they would look to windows like a pair of master IDE drives on a Primary and Secondary IDE Channel even though each has it's own dedicated controller.

I have a maxtor 90645d3 i need to make it my master drive...can u tell me the jumper settings plz

On the back of the drive you should see 3 groups of 2 pins. One probably already has the plastic jumper on it. They should be marked: m s cs. The m mis the master setting. s is slave & cs is cable select. Place the jumper onto the group of pins marked m & your drive is now set to master. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

Dell Dimension 5000 Desktop

You don't need drivers for a hard drive! Just plug it in and it will be recognised by the BIOS.

The only thing you will need to do is make sure you designate it as a primary or slave drive - whatever the old drive was set to. On the back there is what looks like an eight pin plug, with a jumper across two of the pins. Depending which pins are connected will change the drive designation. There is usually a sticker next to them telling you which to connect for primary and slave.

Dvd drive

Typically the master/slave setting is done with jumpers on the back of the drive. Look at the connection at the back and look for markings for Master and Slave. If you have the manual, that will tell you too.
