Ignore that for now. Look through the View Finder and see if you can take a photo? The Display is not used to take photos UNLESS you are in LIVE VIEW MODE. You may not be used to this you may think it is a CoolPix but it is a DSLR. In most cases the Display is used to change settings. After you take a phto use the REPLAY button... Does the display show your photo?
Some thing is wrong with the electronics that send the image to the viewfinder when you compose a picture. Not good especially if you zoom in and aim is off.
That camera can be repaired but is it cost effective to do? The parts are proprietary and the labor on those things is extensive. Unless it is a very expensive piece of gear, you might just be better off replacing it.
The T1i does not have this feature, like most digital SLR cameras. You should just look through the viewfinder to take the photo, which gives you a much more precise view of the photo, where you can better assess the correctness of focus, etc. This feature is called "Live View" and is available on some newer or higher end models.
Unfortunately the Nikon Coolpix 7900 does not have a 'display' button to take care of this. So you need to go through Menu to access Setup menu. Here you will get option to customize the display.
