All monitors will work on any pc/mac computer.
The only concern might be how old is the monitor (low resolution) connected to a brand new computer (high resolution). But it usually auto adjust at windows boot up.
Check the VGA connector (blue) or DVI connector (white) for the monitor matching the pc tower
Well if you are sure the computer is running, then you could have a bad inverter, take a flashlight and shine it on the screen, if you see the icons and computer booting, then you have a bad inverter, go on amazon and order another LCD. also if you have a desk top monitor, connect the monitor to your laptop, then boot up your laptop, hold down the "FN" (function) button and press "F4", you should see everything on your desktop monitor. Good luck.
I'm guessing the different monitors are different sizes? The only thing a driver for a monitor will do will tell the computer the max resolution that the monitor will be able to go up to. However most 90% of monitors can use the built in windows driver without issues. Your best bet is going to be to change the resolution on the monitor. To do this you can either hook up the old monitor, lower the resolution, and then plug in the other monitor. Or you can boot the computer into VGA low resolution mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up and selecting that option. From there you can lower the resolution, and then put it at something more desirable with the new monitor.
The other possibility being your Gateway monitor is actually malfunctioning and you just happened to hook up a bad monitor.
Try turning on the monitor before the Compaq system box, if Win is doing what it should, it will 'find' a 'new device' and reinstall the drivers for it.
It may not look right but you can change the resolution after it boots up.
Do you see the BIOS splash screen or anything?
Try booting into safe mode by pressing F* as soon as you power on the computer. If the monitor works, then it is a bad driver. Roll back to a previous restore point, boot to last known good coonfiguration. Last Known good configuration is available from the same as the safe mode screen.

All you need to do is connect a monitor to the video port on the laptop, then power up the monitor first then boot up the laptop. The video signal will automatically divert to the external monitor first.
since your computer didnt recognize your monitor just add it manually ...if its an hp lcd screen hit the button above the power button on the monitor and it will auto adjust itself..if it still dont work go under control panel to monitors and add it.
i havent seen this question asked, and believe me i have searched. i have compaq presario, windows xp media edition 2005, 64 amd processor, model # SR2017CL, with HP 1703 17" monitor. Prob-put computer in hibernate mode other evening, without turning it off. when i woke up, screen had diagonal lines going across it. i rebooted, well manually restarted, since comp would not respond. Message comes up white with black writing, essentially, prob with active desktop, restore or turn off. i tried to turn off and screen went back to diag. lines. looks like the horizontal hold of a tv screen is asque. tried adjusting monitor to no avail. tried a few more times, was fine for a few mins then went to same thing. now when i turn monitor on it blinks red, blue, and so on. just whole screen that color. so i am at the point where i dont know if its the comp or the monitor. (i am quite a newby) ty for any help you can give ellie
how long do you wait before you turn the computer back off?
