I have heard that the printer head will move further from paper if media type is "envelope" and prevent this issue, is this true?

You seem to have clogged nozzles/printhead. Take out cartridges, do a thorough clean down where cartridges sit, the printhead, even the roller as well. Run your printers own cleaning maintenance before you do it manually with cleaning solution. Problem should be gone when you reinsert cartridges. Don't froget to reset ink levels and cartridges. good luck!!!

On my MP780, be careful to select the appropriate paper type; I was getting black smudges on the left side of my envelopes until I explicitly set that my paper type was "envelope" from "plain paper".
Another idea is to adjust the "ink drying wait time" to a higher level.

The paper thickness lever is not on the front...it is on the floor of the "paper output tray" chamber. It is hard to see without directed light.
Refer to Loading Paper section of the Quick Start Guide....p 15 2 Prepare to load paper
(4) Adjust Paper Thickness Lever
(See diagram)
Or look at the "User's Guide on-screen manual" as directed by the Note on p. 17
I really had to search to find this lever while attempting to resolve my problem with a badly aligned printing head. I am going to have to buy a new printer. It definitely won't be a Canon due to the rip off cost of print cartridges.
Hope this is helpful.
