I don't know a lot about cars but as a female shall do I will explain this problem the best I can just bare with me. My mother told me she hit a manhole cover and all the sudden the navigator started making this horrible noise. Kinda sounds like a helicopter. Its clearly coming from the drivers top front motor. It makes the sound when started up and it will not get better. It gets a little quieter when you push on the gas but the noise is still there. My husband thinks it is a bent rod?!? If anyone is a mechanic please help! My dad is a mechanic but he lives 3200 miles away and thinks it could be the vacuum hose. Thank you!
Not a vacuum hose. If it is coming from the top of the motor, I would first check the oil. If there is a hole punched into the oil pan , you may be very low on oil. If oil's fine, I would suggest looking at the transmission housing. If the manhole came up and hit the housing, it may have cracked that, or cracked the fly wheel. One more thing I'm thinking is that if the manhole hit your starter, and pushed it up, It may have cracked the fly wheel. This can make it sound like it's at the top of the motor. Very loud tap tap tap tap. If you excellerate, the noise will go faster too. I just can't see a manhole doing any damage to anything in the top of motor. Make sure you check the oil ASAP. Hard to tell without hearing it. A video would even help. Let me know what you come up with. Good luck

I had experienced the same problem with my 93 TC. I'll try to make it short. Replace the Idle Control Valve. Cost me $50 at AutoZone. It has a electronic plunger that has a rubber o ring on the end of it. It separates two air chambers inside the valve. When the rubber gets old and the plunger is suppose to cut off the air coming in from one chamber to the other, the air gets sucked between the chambers across the old rubber causing the humming noise. That is also why the engines revs up and down and wont idle right. It is located between the firewall and the back of the motor just to the left (drivers side) of the throttle control assembly. When you look up on the internet on how to replace it, it will tell you to remove all the housing surrounding the wiper blade control arms and assembly so that you can access it. If you take your time, just remove some of the hoses and wires connected around it and you can access it without removing all that ****. Only has two screws to it that point up and can be reached with a ratchet and extension. Car runs great now and finally got rid of that noise.
SOURCE: Hi Friends, I just bought
if it makes the noise when you first start and then goes away It is probably the air suspension pump coming on like normal. These pumps have a tendency to be noisy. if there is no noticable problem with the suspension except for the noise I wouldn't worry about unless the noise bothers you.It is about a $500 repair

Hate to burst ya'll bubble but I just got my 2003 lincoln aviator back after I had a front end accident took it in to have the oil changed and check for a transmission service also wanted them to check for a front end noise. Well go figure apparently its in the front differnential in something called the "vista clutch" anway it requires a new transfer case to be purchased. Apparently it runs about $2000 with labor included. Go figure the insurance company wont pay for it after already dumping $8000 in damages already to fix and stated they would not total my truck with 83000 miles on it. Well all I can say is i was told they only go out if they are burnt out from locking the wheels up and skidding and just 1 in a 1000 goes out so I guess we are just he lucky ones. Good luck hope this helps a little also make sure ther is nothing wrong with the gears cause it could create an even bigger problem.. Peace out!

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.
